Private Joy (Edit)

Question for ya, 4 those of u who have heard it.

What does the edit of Private Joy sound like? Does it just fade out by the end guitar solo?

That's not an edit but the whole song.
Otherwise it would say edit.
I have this and just listened to it.

I knew there was a 45 but I didn't know there was a 12 Inch. I'm assuming that "Private Joy" on both the 45 and the 12 Inch are the same since they both have the same time length listed. I'm also assuming they both fade out but the question is, at what point in the song does the fade begin.

.

At the same time though, you never know because I used to have the "Controversy" 8 track tape also. On 8 track tapes in general, track listings were in a different sequence than on the vinyl because there were four programs within the tapes that you could press to go to a different portion of the tape because there was no fast forward or rewind buttons on the players. "Ronnie Talk To Russia" on the 8 track tape does not fade out after the explosion. Instead, it continues all the way up to the countdown at full volume through the countdown of "1, 2, 3", then stops abruptly. Then a few seconds of silence is heard between tracks and "Sexuality" begins.

That is what I was wondering. Does it just cuts right off or is there a fade out. I was going to buy a copy on discogs but they going for like $30.00 and its not that worth it if I can make it myself.

Yeah, those prices are ridiculous. That's why it's best to buy something while it's new. You didn't have that option but I did. I remember walking to the record store one evening to buy it. Unfortunately, when I arrived, the record store was closed. It was Christmas Eve and they had closed early. lol After the holidays, I changed my mind because in those days, there was loads and loads of great music from all artists so I chose to buy some different records instead rather than to buy a 45 of two songs that I already had on an album simply to get the faded versions. I could slap myself for not buying it then but I didn't realize that once those 45s went out of style and sold out in the record stores that they would never come back. I just assumed back then that I could eventually buy it at a later date.

I would like to know that as well. It's the first time I ever hear that an alt. edit could exist, but a fade out would indeed makes sense. I would be grateful if someone could provide this information, as I would have to add such an edit to my website (and Princevault would also have to add it).

Since this is from memory as you say you don't have it anymore, are you absolutely certain of this? It's somewhat awkward because in the end with an abrupt ending I fail to see why they did this. I assume it's that one release?

Yes, I remember that very well. I used to wear that tape out in my grandmother's station wagon which is why I bought it to begin with because all cars had 8 track players back then. lol I found the abrupt stop odd as well. I remember I used to question why they didn't just continue with "Let's Work" but I guess they wanted to keep the seque going with "Annie Christian" on the fourth program. I also wondered why they didn't just start "Sexuality" immediately after the countdown of "1, 2, 3" instead of putting a few seconds of silence between the tracks.

Thats so awkward. To be honest I have never played an 8 track or heard it before in the 40 years of my life. So its cool that they have other versions...sequences out of order that I have never heard of.

Listening again to both versions back to back, it's more accurate to say the fade out on the 7" ends at the same time as the drums do on the album version, not before.

Okay, so no real reason to just create my own version if it is just pretty much the same thing. I been looking at some edits and just wonder how they sound. These deluxe sets have been eye opening as I have never owned a lot of them on 45.

Thanks for clarifying. This is very odd alright, but like paisleypark4, I've never played or even seen an 8-tracks in my whole life, so who knows. However, rereading your description, I wonder to which extent this should be considered an alternate version. It seems more like butcher editing, but besides the abrupt cut, my understanding is that it's exactly similar to the normal version (that would immediately proceed with Let's Work instead if cutting)?

Actually, there is a reason if you want a version with a professional sounding finished ending for compilation purposes. I'm always making compilation CDs for friends, whether it's various artists compilations or "greatest hits" compilations of a particular artist. On a homemade CD, whenever you follow a sequed track with a different track than is on the original album, the abrupt stop at the end of the track (before the next track by another artist begins) sounds horrible. I fixed that problem with "Private Joy" though by re-recording "Private Joy" and then mixing "Orgasm" into it at the end making the transition blend matching up the guitars at the ending of "Private Joy" and beginning of "Orgasm" and then letting Vanity's moans continue all the way to the end of "Orgasm". Kinda like a "Private Joy" 12 Inch version.

What a great idea! Never thought about that at all. Very cool Andy you should send that to me! It is annoying to have that abrupt ending when you shuffle, or want to make a compilation...

No, it's not a different version whatsoever. It is the exact same as the album version. 8 track tapes contained the versions as the album versions just like cassette tapes would. Vinyl albums and cassette tapes were similar in regards that both of them had a Side 1 and a Side 2 so the sequence of the songs on most cassette tapes were exactly the same as the vinyl sequence. 8 track tapes were different though. There was no Side 1 or Side 2 and you didn't flip an 8 track tape over.

.

Imagine how a VHS video tape was loaded into the machine. It was simply pushed into the machine, face up, there was no flipping it over and when it ended, then you rewinded the tape. 8 track tapes were pressed into the front of the machine, face up, the same way. However, 8 track tapes didn't rewind. Instead, they played endlessly on a continuous loop until you pulled the tape out of the machine. Since people didn't have the patience to wait through the entire tape simply to hear a particular song, the tape had four sections within it called "programs". On the machine, if you pressed "Program 3", for instance, the tape would jump over to that section of the tape and play the songs within that program. The program didn't start from the front though, it resumed in progress from whatever section of the tape that it was.

.

If the length of a tape was approximately 40 minutes (I'm just using that length as example to round it off to an even number), then each program contained 10 minutes of music (40 minutes divided by 4). They would change the sequence of tracks on 8 track tapes trying fit the songs within each program without having them end before the program ended. (Imagine making a cassette tape and as you approach the end of side 1, the song hasn't ended yet.). So when you see the track lising on the label of the "Controversy" 8 track tape and see "Do Me Baby (Beg.)" and "Do Me Baby (Conc.)" that means the end of program 1 arrived before the song finished so they had to fade it down before it ended and then fade it back up when program 2 began. I never understood why they did this because when I used to make homemade 8 track tapes, it was much better to hear the "click" between programs during a song in progress at full volume, than to be annoyed by the fading out, then silence, then fading back in between programs. I know, it's hard to understand if you've never experienced 8 track tapes. I loved them though. To me, they had a much better sound than cassette tapes with stronger bass.

No, at least not to us outside of the so called "elite" traders (or "serious archivers").I know of one person that had it (he died at the end of 2020), and I know of one person he played a snippet of it to over the phone (along with Bloody Mouth and maybe one other track). He also claimed to have some other uncirculating tracks that he either paid for or traded for. Since he's died I've been wondering what his family plans to do with his collection. At a memorial/Prince party here in Metro Detroit last year, some of his collection was auctioned off by his family, mainly promo items and rare memorabilia but no music and at that time his mother said she wasn't sure what she was going to do with the music part of his collection. I have some friends that are in contact with her pretty regularly, but it still seems too soon to get them to enquire about it. But, I definitely want to be close if she decides to sell it at some point.

Well I'll be darned, I just pulled my copy out and it is indeed a fade out ending. I will have to add this to my colection of radio edits. I aso recently found out the Spanish 12" single of "Mountains" is missing the last 10 seconds or so where the song continues after the fade on other pressings. Probably should add that to the colection of edits too.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Thanks for explaining. What a fascinating format!! But wait a second, then this means any track with (beg.) and (concl.) on any 8 tracks was faded out then back in? Because in this case, these would qualify as alternate versions eek

Damn, I see that on Discogs. This is also something I missed, despite looking up each and every entry of each and every release on Discogs up until 1986. Either this info was added since, or I overlooked it. Thanks for catching it up yes

Thank you Andy for all this information. I dont know much about 8 tracks so this description is fitting and I can see why some people like them still the way you describe it.. The tape is thicker than the size of a cassette too so I would assume there was more space and information on them. Just never heard the sound.
