Well the singer sings that very high…give the song real vocal punch…prince on the other hand almost talks the lyrics with his nasal voice.. meh. .. not real singing (talking about the slow version) could be done by every one … btw. Did prince ever hit that high notes with his chest voice without screaming… cant think of any examples right now [Edited 1/3/22 10:49am] |

That means it's not intended to be sung, it's supposed to be screamed. I'm sure Prince would have excused, Aretha or someone he liked hitting that note, and apologies to anyone who really dreamed of what an Aerosmith knock off cover of Let's Go Crazy might sound like, but the Prince version is the definitive version.
In the recorded separations floating around you can hear there's a lot of voodoo in that track, it's not intended to be his best vocal or musical performance. He's doing a kind of Big Bopper, Jerry Lee, Little Richard thing that just sounded more futuristic to audiences at the time because of how robotic he played it, and the monotone deliver.
It's like Lou Reed songs, you can sing them but you can't really say they're supposed to be that way and Lou just couldn't perform them, they were mean to be delivered the way he delivered them.

U are talking about the original soundtrack version from purple rain? If so, thats the real one…never heard a better version by prince…he seems to fuck the song up everytime live…with horn/ weak vocals/ slow version… Anyway prince seems to record lot of songs where he is vocally in his lazy-confort-Zone in the studio…thats why lot of songs dont sound powerfull live… |

Can definitely agree on that. I just think the magic is in the recording with that one. Perfoming it with stronger vocals wasn't going to change that, the slower version with 3rd eye is a good example. The rawness on record (and the visuals that introduced many of us to that song) make it sound like a live performance so I think that's why it's such a weird sensation live when it lacks energy. The Revolution did a fine version of it live on their reunion shows when they stuck mainly to Mark and Wendy with the crowd.

The stems (or quasi stems) make me question that. They could play it live, we heard it pretty close with the First Avenue show, but there's a lot of overdubs including the vocals and synths, stuff they didn't play live. Maybe they recorded them rough like it was live, but still overdubs. I also think they did use part of the First Avenue show, but people keep changing their minds on that one.

It does sound a bit clean. And there's the fact he polished and overdubbed it multiple times to create the 12". It's anyone's guess how much of that warehouse recording is actually on the album. |
