US Billboard Charts (12/02/2022)

Top Album Sales
TW LW WOC Title Artist ( Peak )
25 20 196 Purple Rain (Soundtrack) - Prince
43 66 285 Thriller - Michael Jackson ( 9 )
81 Re-Entry 24 Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 - Janet Jackson ( 81 )
.
Vinyl Albums

TW LW WOC Title Artist ( Peak )
10 6 241 Purple Rain (Soundtrack) - Prince And The Revolution ( 1 )

Charts' Sayin' :
.
1)I think Thriller is now out of print on vinyl, it already was a few months ago, and that's surely why Purple Rain sold more than MJ's album last year,
Despite 26 millions people watching the Janet documentary on tv, she hardly managed to rank only one album in the top 100. But were his albums still on print on vinyl ?
So kudos to WB to keep Purple Rain in stores without discontinuity.
.
2) Next week we ll see if the Sony reissues are hitting some charts.
My forecast : 1999 will surely do, with a limited ( to how many?) edition : Walmart Exclusive - Prince - 1999 (Clear with White Swirl Vinyl).
Come will also make a comeback, at least in catalog album sales, despite an only CD reissue. The album was long out of print.

I boldly bet on the 1979 eponymous album too.

3) Last year, The RSD release, The Truth, was announced 2 months and ahalf before the actual release.
The 2022 RSD edition will happen in 2 months and an half too ( 23/04/2022).So I think this is likely we won't get anything that year. Maybe on CD or audio cassette this time?

Its imopossible to judge early into a year, last year this time had a spike early because we were just seeing Taylor Swifts "evermore" on Vinyl, and strong Rock releases (which people forget, people BUY rock product) you had the Foo Fighters early in the year also The Pretty Reckless was a big vinyl seller as was Alice Cooper, Rock is still a force on vinyl. So a lot of the Vinyl sales are pulled by Record Store day releases, this years April 2022 has yet to have a set list, but Swift is the ambassador of it worldwide which means she is going to have a release of some kind, which will be huge no matter what it is. Bowie has been menitoned to have record store day releases again, and one thing people also dont realize is that RSD is HUGE with the jazz reissues, so its going to depend on what they got, and there is of course the fall RSD, and then who knows what will happen during the summer, there is rumbling about the Beatles doing a release on Vinyl and CD of the Rooftop concert which was just released digital, so I think its a safe bet a Beatles "new" cd and Vinyl is going to move alot of units. The only thing that can hamper all of this would be a huge COVID stoppage, and I think that every country has realized that lockdowns dont work and we have to live with this and go on.

But don't you know the RSD releases are limited release only?
Of course there are many of them, but that limited thing that makes the salt of the event, temper the potential sales out of it.
.
The labels have to wait 6 months to print a vinyl now.
The RSD is in two months and 8 days now and still nothing was announced, correct me if I m wrong?
Last year the list of the releases was announced two months and an half.
.
So maybe this year this will be an almost all CDs/ cassettes releases.
.
You are saying there will be three RSD this year? April, Summer and fall?
Last year, I only hesrd about the RSD with The Truth, which was record-breaking in term of sales.

April, Summer and fall? Last year, I only hesrd about the RSD with The Truth, which was record-breaking in term of sales.

The thing is though with some of these stores that do RSD they also carry tons of vinyl year round, new releases, theres tons of reissues year round, I forget the name of the store the guy does live youtube stuff about his shipments and I was shocked about how quick he gets things and there gone, yes they are limited and thats mainly because the expense, its not like the old days when they printed up ten million Master P cds sent it to the stores and then 90% didnt sell in most stores so we could send them back, these stores now buy it and have to sell it or sit on it, there is no returning stuff to vendors especially with vinyl. RSD is still two days this year but there has been rumblings to go with a third, and do it in the summer, mainly because some places still are cold in April and they are cold in late November, one snow storm and you are screwed, so a mid year makes sense, when they did the RSD drops because of COVID regulations on stores and people allowed in, they had to break it all up. I'm not so worried about the list not coming out yet, because last year a few things were announced and then pushed, some RSD stuff came in mid december. But anything to get people buying phsyical stuff and if you are an artist that can get that kind of fan base you are in luck and that will turn the tide of the industry. I dont doubt Vinyl sales struggling because of the cost, I was shocked years ago when sales went through the roof for vinyl, mainly because an album most of time was almost 25-30dollars alot are even more. But I was shocked how quick people buy the stuff up, I am very curious if SALES from artists sites are even tracked, because ALOT of these artists sell all different colors of their vinyl and the stuff is gone in hours, now many I hear buy it and then rip you off on EBAY but a sale is a sale at first, but I have a feeling nothing from an artists own site is tracked which is and has always been an issue.

Purple Rain re-enters the Billboard 200 this week at #172 (thanks in part to a 25-16 bump on the Sales chart and a 10-6 move on top vinyl sales). This is its 163rd total week, tying 1999 as his longest-charting album. Some of the albums ahead of PR on the sales chart missed the BB200, so maybe it's starting to get a bit more streaming traction?

SOTT re-enters the sales chart at #90.

So it was after all SOTT which was re-released at Walmart or Target, I don't know, and not 1999? Hard to follow these exclusive release.
.
Not one Sony reissues made the top 100, which means not one broke the 1000 copies worldwide, since the reissues come from US only, correct me if I'm wrong.
Come was #200 on Amazon US, that seemed to be the best selling of these rereissues.
.
Billboard mentioned Prince in their latest issue :

Notably, Encanto is one of only six soundtracks to spend at least five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the last 30 years. Before Encanto, there was Frozen (13 weeks, 2014), Titanic (16, 1998), Waiting to Exhale (five, 1996), The Lion King (10, 1994-95) and the Whitney Houston-led The Bodyguard (20, 1992-93). (Before that, the last soundtrack with at least five weeks at No. 1 was Prince’s Batman in 1989, with six weeks at No. 1.) biggrin

Just a few thoughts about YouTube :
.
1) The Most Beautiful Girl In The World is at last released on streaming platforms amd available on sale, after a 28 years hiatus.
The video is the first one for Prince to be available on "HD", but the one on the account "Richmond Reanzares" keeps on making more views 😅 for a total of 6 millions in 4 years.
The official video doesn't take off, with only 66k views in 2 days.
.
2) The biggest Prince video on YT is without surprise Purple Rain, with 230 millions views since the 22-04-2016. What's more surprising the video is not owned by the official Prince channel! It is owned by a certain " Codfather"😂
The estate could recover that video and make it HD. The movie is already transferred on HD, so that would cost them nothing.
They just don't care or they don't know about the movie.
.
3) The 2nd most viewed Prince video on YT is the guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps on The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Channel.
.
4) Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U has 305 millions views since only the 10-07-2017 !
So that would be in fact the biggest thing related on Prince on YT.

I'm never shocked when his reissues don't chart or have a real effect on sales, outside of PR and SOTT and 1999 I think that's really it for some sort of bump in sales, or if it's something totally new never out there. He couldn't people to buy a lot of theses records when he was alive and promoting to a point, so re boxing them now to me is cool but if you are just going to give me the same album, same tracks, book, packaging, same sound, and not one bonus, I can see why most fans are like, "why am I getting this"

No surprise that new issues did the units they did, Hit N Run from what I remember wasn't issued anywhere but here till his death then it was widely released? 4ever was that rush for sales with of course "moonbeam levels", the PR, SOTT, and 1999 reissues not a shock those are his major albums, Originals and Piano and a microphone 1983 again were "new" kind of releases and of course Welcome 2 America was a new shelved album. I think the Gold Experience vinyl and re issue will be huge, since it was really his last overall commercial album in many markets.

Gold wasn't really " His last overall success ".
In fact some albums after did better overall numbers, such as Emancipation (despite being a triple album), Musicology and 3121.
.
With 24,150 copies for the RSD vinyl + the CD version + maybe the regular 2 LP later that year, TGE could well sell like 40k in the US alone in 2022.
Which is crazy since it sold only like 500k copies in the US in 27 years!
Who said that everybody wants to sell what's already been sold?

In terms of his "crossover" single and airplay it was done with TMBGITW which obviously was on here but didnt originate here. TGE is a big could have been if he was more accessible, because ALL of Musicology and its success was about Prince playing the game. TGE got him a gold record and he did nothing for it pretty much, he did a tour but most of it was before the album was even out. 3121 was another gold record and number 1 record too, but it was an ODD number one, it was like a Bruce Springsteen Bon Jovi number one album, your base gets you the week one sales, and then its pretty much gone, no singles pretty much, very minor play. Even TGE which had I HATE U, that I argue was all based on sales, he had almost no airplay on that song. Musicology again was a big record because he was a media whore pretty much, he played the game, he showed to everything, he interviewed, there was no "slave" talk, and he toured like he had not in a long time, he gave the mainstream what it wanted, the hits. I recall going to see him for the "One Nite Alone" tour here in NYC which still for me is one of the best shows I have seen him do, he almost played no hits, there were almost boos in the balcony seats at times, that PR crowd portion that wanted hits, got "If you came to get your purple rain on, U in the wrong house". I didnt mind but a good portion of that "larger" audience did.
