Here's something that never gets mentioned - what song does this part (3:40) remind me of?

and it was released about a month before the initial tracking of Housequake eek

even more interesting: there is a vocal version of Papa Legba with Pops Staples on vocals,
as in Mavis' father.

Bit of a stretch to say those drums are a direct reference to the same degree as some of these other ones though.

Prince used sound effects from the same set of sounds for "Live 4 Love" that he did for "Pop Life," "Lady Cab Driver," "Delirious" and others.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Are we talking about the kick drum here? That drum pattern was in every other song around that time. And if we're talking about big echoy kick drums, try listening to "Kashmir."

It sorta reminds me how just a few years later, another particular beat was used in songs from Soul II Soul, Lisa Stansfield, Enigma, and others. The radio was like one long ass mix in those days.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Nope, that's not what I'm talking about. The countdown voice at the start of both tracks is the same idea. And Prince was known to often check out music quite different from that which he recorded himself. P's album came out later the same year as well.

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...

isn't the countdown at the start of Live 4 Love a sample from the movie Barbarella?

Yeah, I get it. I don't think a countdown at the beginning of a song, or in a song, is that unusual. But, who knows.

LOL, I remember thinking the same! For about a year or so there were so many hits with that specific beat. I think it originated in the Dennis Edwards ft. Siedah Garrett song "Don't Look Any Further". Wasn't it Eric B & Rakim who popularized a sampled version of this beat originally?

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I'm never sure where it came from, but it sure was popular.

It was in "Keep On Movin'" from Soul II Soul, Lisa's "All Around The World," Enigma's "Sadeness Pt I," "Tom's Diner," "Back To Life," "Close To You" by Maxi Priest, Shanice "I Love Your Smile," "Candy Rain" by Soul For Real," "It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day" by S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M., "Just Another Day" by Jon Secada, Soho's "Hippy Chick," all had the same beat or a very close variation thereof. I created a playlist of songs I could remember with the beat. I'm sure there are more.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I think it is actually nice when you can feel a bit of referencing in a song... (at least if you like the referenced song).

With Cream, I always also hear a bit of Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer - maybe it's the drums...

Thatnsong actually replaced "Kiss" from the number one spot in the USA...

It was U Got the Look I think that was a response to Addicted to Love.

I think I had a thread on the Org last year or so where I asked for songs with that beat, which is how the playlist came about.
