ICNTTPOYM Remix?

Wondering if I've dreamt this but I have a memory of stumbling over an unrealised remix of ICNTTPOYM online, probably about 12-15 years ago and absolutely loving it. Would have been saved on an old PC and long since lost and not on any boots I have and now I cannot find a single reference to it online; Prince Vault makes no suggestion of a remix ever being produced, Google returns nothing, so have I made it up? Was it an unofficial mix perhaps? Not asking for any links to boots, just starting to doubt my sanity as to whether it actually ever existed?

Simple answer is yes, it existed.

Wait... Prince vault doesn't mention it? Additional vocals on the chorus and the added horns and percussion, a restructuring of parts. It''s like a 12" from the golden era of when he did really cool 12" mixes.

Was it labeled the "Joey Coco mix"?

That would seem to be a big omission on PrinceVault.

I found this from another board as to why it wasn't on SOTT deluxe:

"- I Could never take The Place Of Your Man (Joey Coco mix) (NOT RECOGNISED BY THE ESTATE AS AN OFFICIAL MIX, THERE IS NO MASTER IN THE VAULT)"

And isn't there that W&L mix that is longer and differently arranged? I wonder if that's it?

I don't know how well that song, being a rock-influenced pop song could be remixed like a dance song could be remixed. I think about the Susan Rogers remix on a Queen record. It wasn't a great song to try and remix. It wasn't Rogers's fault. It was the song choice.

Yeah, it exists, and considering that it contains musical elements Prince incorporated in other live performances, I personally think it's an official remix. The added guitar work is very Don Henley/Boys of Summer-esque.

The "ManMix 12" Remix"? This was supposed to be on the Connections bootleg, then it leaked shortly after that was supposed to come out.

It's (assuming we're talking about the same thing) sourced from a tape with this tracklisting:

1) Batdance (John Luongo Remix feat. Big Daddy Kane) (8:40)

2) Like A Prayer (Dub Beats) - Madonna (4:40) (*unreleased mix featuring Prince's "Skinny MF with the High Voice" sample)

3) I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man (ManMix 12" Remix) (7:58)

4) The Future (William Orbit Remix) (6:58)

5) Gotta Stop (Messin' About) (2:53)

6) Trust (12") (8:15)

7) Trust (Dub) (7:13)

8) Trust (7" w/ Intro Clap) (4:22)

9) Trust (7" w/ New Vocal EQ) (4:15)

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

I definitely heard it, and had it…and now I’ve not got it! And can’t find it anywhere on the internets. It was really good.
Maybe some kind of ‘Mandela effect’ has taken place!!

AvocadosMax

you must be thinking of the unreleased Shep Petiibone remix..... it's a thing!

it's my favorite, tbh. it's so 80s yet so good

i mean, obviously the definitive version is the one on the SOTT album, but this is a real treat

I think the mix in question, that it seems many people have not heard, is the "Joey Coco Mix". It's not like a club mix. Not minimalist. It's maximist. More layers.

I do remember a Pettibone remix excerpt posted then taken down (was that back in myspace days? or was that after 2016?) too.

I'm not sure it's a remix, but maybe the OP thought that? Isn't the W&L version more of an original version (as was "Strange Relationship") and Prince re-worked them out of it when SOTT was finalized?

I love the Shep remix. Why he didn't release it back in the day is beyond me (as well as Strange Relationship single AND remix). I am intrigued by a Joey Coco mix!

I think I have the other Dream Factory mix too. It's slightly different...no idea if W&L were involved but it makes sense since he changed it when they were fired.

Update: so I guess Shep and JC mix are the same. Good to know and will end my search!! LOL

Are we talking about the version with the extended intro that starts with Prince siging "U know and I know..."?

Yes, at least, that's what I'm talking about.

bongos, the quiet guitar solo isolated, and the vocal with a echo.

Are the "Shep Pettibone remix" and "Joey Coco mix" the same thing? If I was following the other thread correctly, it's the same song -- there's just a disagreement about its origins. Some people think it'd Shep remix, while others don't think it sounds like Shep's style and was more likley made by Prince. Is that right?

Where did the title Joey Coci mix come from?

did you read this?: https://prince.org/msg/7/438984

It was labeled "Joey Coco Mix" on some boots and collections of outtakes it appeared on. And it sure sounds like a Joey Coco mix to me.

For those who have Work It 2.0, it's on disc 13 of that.

It's also on Chameleon disc 4.

Nope!

It's a hot mess, actually.

It starts off ok with the breakdown as the intro, then the minimalistic verse-chorus-verse...

...but, then, the breakdown is inserted again followed by a jarring, chopped up version of the guitar solo.

This is followed by fake ass "horns" that i swear are just like the ones on the remix of "Ice Ice Baby"!

Then the casio-like drum preset gets even worse with way too many bongo 'n' cymbal stabs where the breakdown should be.

...followed by more fake horns, percussion galore, one more chorus, then they throw in the kitchen sink(s) till it fades out.

.

Butt, if someone likes it, that's cool, too lol

LOL, you forgot the poltergeist vocals the briefly come up in the middle of the remixed breakdown.

Prince loved the potergeist effect on vocals... hmmm

So why wasn't this included on the SDE? Someone mentioned the Estate doesn't consider it official -- that would suggest Prince didn't create it, right? But even if was a Shep mix, that didn't stop the Estate from releasing the remix of Strange Relationship (which I certainly could have lived wihtout). Could it be a fan mix?

they could not find the master recording of it. But if you listen to it, it does not sound like it could have been constructed from the album version. It's on a number of bootleg sets out there at this point. I was disappointed it wasn't on the SOTT set, but I did really appreciate the surprise remix version of Strange Relationship.

It was circulating among collectors for a few years before it got put into a "public" bootleg collection. Maybe around 2011-2012.
