Guitar Solo in 777-9311? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Prince actually play the Guitar Solo in 777-9311 and then gave it to Jesse to play when perform with The Time? Or did Jesse play the original Solo?

I think that guitar was all Jesse--totally his styling. Prince gave the band their core material, but the reason why that band stood out among his protoge projects is that each of those musicians had their own hot licks that would really rival Prince's own presentation of the moment.

I read somewhere (Prince Vault, Per nElson book? here?) that Prince purposely played the solo like Jesse. Not sure what the truth is.

I read somewhere that Prince played the solo in Jesse's style and told him "you play a mean solo on this on." [Edited 12/16/21 23:16pm] __________________________________________________

Dangit! Yeah--that's right, Prince could mimic other guitarists' style! Maddening. Musta drove Jesse a little crazy. >

First of Prince didn't mimick Jesse but he did use Jesses guitar and pedals . second think i still can't believe that in this era of interenet there are people still question who plays it.it screams Prince. We all know how Jesse plays fast pentatonic noodling with no strong melodic content.

I was with you until "We all know how Jesse plays fast pentatonic noodling with no strong melodic content." . Whilst I will always prefer Prince (perhaps bias, I'm too involved to be objective), I'd defend Jesse's playing as deserving quite a bit more than just "noodling" and there is certainly plenty of melody and irrestible groove. My personal evidence for this: -
- Love Struck - c'mon, that major 3rd, flat 7th moving into 4th, root octace up little repeat is sick. In fact I'm reminded of it somehow whenever Prince plays that gorgeous little lick towards the end of the sacrific of victor version of The Ride (at round 5:12). BTW, that;s one of my all time fav solos. - I'm just wanting you - beautfiullly melodic and soulful solo. Articulate playing.
- She I can't resist - Funk face stuff, great tone. - Merciful - Gorgeous solo, hypnotic, shades of Pali Gap Jimi. Probably my fav of his.
Just saying, I know you're a guitar head as I am too. Interested to hear your opinion on the above tracks.

I saw in some good sites about Prince that he played all instruments on this one (and it´s prrobably true, since he played the bass and used the Linn preset). He was surely pretending it was another player. And I believe only a guy like Prince would have so much freedom to do all those noises in the end.

I adore I'm Just Wanting You.that song is nothing short of masterpiece but i think that his fast pentatonic licks lead people to believe he is better guitar player than Prince. Prince composes more memorable solos compared to Jesse. Also Prince picks note with his right hand much cleaner than Jesse.

Gustavo u play so u can recognise guitar players way of thinking but that solo screams Prince.the only thing different is Peince used tremolo bar on that solo at the time when he was not using tremolo .although he used tremolo bar sporadicly on songs like Rearrange,Private Joy and couple of others.

I always believed the solo was played by P (probably on Jesse's G&L guitar or a Fender Stratocaster with a whammy bar). The guitar licks (and tone) are similar to what P played on "Lady Cab Driver".

You must be a Guitarist or some other talented musician. I was speaking of lay people general terms that don't have a clue what you are talking about so they would not know if Prince or Jesse did the original Solo.

How many of you on here can Play this Solo and other Prince Guitar Solos very well? [Edited 12/21/21 21:04pm]

. Princevault.com is usually very accurate. I remember I once saw a site with detailed info on The Time and I believe it was the first time I saw this info. But I forgot the name. . And Prince himself said he was the only one who could play the bass in 777-9311 in Bass Player Magazine.

Prince. He did everything but drum and sing on the first two Time albums. Jesse's solos come into play on Ice Cream Castle - I think that's him on My Drawers and I think the blues guitar on If The Kid Can't is Jesse. I've always wanted to know is the solo on Jerk Out Jesse when Morris says "cut em Jesse" but again I think it might be Prince?
