What Prince songs get a surprisingly low play rate on Spotify? I'm shocked to know Temptation sits on 695k plays. It is the least played track on ATWIAD, but I get it; it's like drinking a cool glass of water after eating some pineapple. And while I'm at it, is I Wanna Melt With U really that bad? 480k plays? We are the flowers growin' in God's garden
And that is why he spreads the shit around

If a song wasn't released on single or promoted on the radio, movie, etc. You can't expect it to have strong streaming. Especially if it's on a not well-known album. Moreover, generally the last song on an album is the least played, because most people give up the listening in its entirety before the end. A song of 9 minutes length would get less play than a 3 or 4 minutes song, that's logical. And by the way, 695k for Temptation is already huge for such a crappy songš

You've scorched me and the Temptation fans.
I don't agree that a final song should be less heard considering the option of shuffling through an album nowadays, but I see your logic. We are the flowers growin' in God's garden

All you gotta do is put BTS on the songs and they will hit a billion in a few days. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit whoās never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Not sure exactly how long someone has to listen for before it's considered a play, but it's not the whole song.

Good point, but when you're not familiar with the artist, yyou see a 9 min song, ythat s a trial. You d rather try a shorter song Of course, Temptation is not Purple Rain. There was a reason why Prince made hit amd run 1 so short : it was his first album on streaming. He wanted to be sure people went to the end of the album amd the songs.

By the same logic, the first track of an album has a listening boost. How many listenings for the opening track of ATWIAD? More than Temptation The theory that an opening track should have many listens more is not applicable of every album. Look at an album like UTCM; the first three tracks are the least played. HITNRUN Phase One is only a song short of 40 minutes. We are the flowers growin' in God's garden

But there are 11 songs for 38 minutes, so an average of about 3 minutes by songs. So that maximises the chance of a casual listener listening to it without him getting too bored and skip a song. That's the common strategy used nowadays by many popular artists whose "sales" Comes mostly from streaming.

Well, it's a fantastic song to me. I never ever skip it. It ends in fear and desperation... as he says 'goodbye'. Fantastic creepy ass song to me. Temptation is one of his worst songs. That silly God talk then he lies about leaving, then he goes and fires Wendy And Lisa.

All ever so true. - Actually, how many times did Prince officialy announced that he would stop ? There are at least a few times that I remember... from back in the days. Aaahhhhhhh, back in the dayzzz. When Prince was mad as fuck, and we all took it the way it came.

"albums matter, like black lives..." - Streaming... I believe Prince didn't get that quite right imho. Yet he wanted an album to be heard as an album, by making a short one for streaming ? Naaaah, nope. - My nephew, 14yo, first gives a quick few seconds spin of each track on an album of his most favorite artist. Then he quickly selects some for his playlist, dletes te rest, thus never listens to that album again - ...is what he told me. ''Why should I'', he said, "when the rest is crap..." Quick consumerism is a term he did not wanted to hear about, when I tried to explained that to him. ...and I felt old. Very old. I just long for a better masterred version. The one on the LP and CD are so loud, and also not well mixed. Same for Raspberry Beret and a few others... Love that album by the way. Really do. Apparently 150 streams equal one single track sale, and 1250 streams of an album equal one album sale.

Somebody currently popular is always going to be bigger than oldies artists. It's not like Al Jolson & The Andrews Sisters was a thing for the 1980s MTV audience. There's some oldies songs that are currently big though, because they are used a lot in movies, TV shows, video games, commercials, etc. Such as: MC Hammer ~ U Can't Touch This Queen ~ Bohemian Rhapsody Kool & The Gang ~ Celebration Whitney Houston ~ I Will Always Love You You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit whoās never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
