Joy in Repetition with no segue in. Could this be the biggest oversight since leaving off those two songs from the 1999 SDE? When Michael Howe brought up making streaming playlists, I can't believe he thought people would want to make a version of Crystal Ball or DF with songs that have variating sound levels much less chopped segues like this case. One of my biggest wishes now, aside from unheard material, is a one off single release of Joy in Repetition where it has a clean intro. And maybe put a demo or other song as a bside. But holy shit, does this make anyone else go insane?

Absolutely drives me nuts.
It's the one track I really want, and I come to this forum literally every day in the hope that there'll be some news about it.
Your thread heading raised my hopes for a moment, but still, happy to know I'm not the only person who feels like this.

One of his greatest songs, but kind of trashed by how he offically released it, and made the laziest "music video" for it in the movie (to an edited, abbreviated version of the song). My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

....among big collectors ...i heard that alternate takes(different guitar parts) of Joy in Repetition do exist... circulating not in public domains but in the highest circles of collectors !

Surely some fan has frankensteined the intro to the released… "I like to watch."

Yes, I believe I have a version a friend mashed up with the original outro from the cassette version as well.
That is the only issue with this classic song. So many ranging sources...also Prince himself placed it on different configurations with the intro also spliced in wrong areas. The released version's crowd introduction even starts in stereo and splits into mono by accident. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I'm talking about back in 1987, not now. I mean on vinyl. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

The haunting beat at the start make the mood so different. Kind like a different angle of approach.

I love that intro so much. I have frankensteined it myself several times over the years but never really satisfied with the outcome. Last version I applied noise reduction to the intro which did help match it to the GBridge version.
But yes, please let it come out at some point!

Was he just that lazy that he really re-used the Alphabet St segue into an official album? "I bet you no one will notice". Sure Prince, sure. Horrible decision.

That segue pre-dates "Lovesexy" and "Alphabet St". My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

That segue pre-dates "Lovesexy" and "Alphabet St". Sure, but it was still a very strange choice to re-edit the song specifically to include it on GB for no ostensible reason.

Meh. I've never understood the appeal of the drumbeat intro. I think the alley talk sets the scene much more effectively.
That said, I would be all in for a compilation of alternate mixes such as this, the rough mix of Witness, sax version of Crucial, etc, etc....

- Agree somehow. Can't ever listen to that without having 'Eye No' poppin' up in my head. He should've mixed it backwards into the song. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I suspect that the original intro was lost during the adding of the segue and therefore stayed this way. Just like the swap of adore and beautiful night

Its just four kick drum echos really from the song...before the song starts. It lasts 32 seconds exactly.
I agree, the Lovesexy alley / bar segue fits because that is what he is talking about in the song. [Edited 11/10/21 14:31pm] Straight Jacket Funk Affair

"for every time she said the words, another one of his doubts were gone"
imagine recording songs like Crystal Ball and Joy In Repetition in 1986? he was WAY beyond his time.
my favorite Prince song. unfortunately it's missing from Brazilian streaming services... probably because of some random song by a random artist featured on the Grafitti Bridge soundtrack. [Edited 11/10/21 16:57pm]

And this project was maybe the biggest and most expensive of his entire career. Still couldn't edit 10 seconds of a song. Blows my mind!
