Kanye West mentions Prince during his Drink Champs interview

I´m watching the Kanye West Drink Champs interview right now and at the 1.28.16 minutes mark he mentions Prince and how he "gave" him the song Jail and I´m not quite sure what he really means because the song does not contain a Prince sample or lyric, and I checked the songwriting credits and don´t see Prince there. So is this just about inspiration or do you know if there was some sort of Prince involvement ?

I checked Princevault, too but to no avail.

Hi KoolEaze.

Obviously I do not know for certain, but I think I can say with some confidence that he's not speaking literally here. He mentions Prince's 'Gemini spirit' directly after, so I think he's trying to say they connected on a spiritual level over contracts and the music business. Also, the subject had came up early in the interview that he'd likely be name dropping a lot, so by this point he was probably just having fun with it.

Kanye is extraordinarily prolific and a good proportion of his demos, outtakes and 'work in progress' tracks have leaked. As far as I'm aware no elements of Jail existed prior to this year. I can't believe Kanye would have sat on something Prince gave him for over five years.

That´s what I thought, too, so I was wondering whether he was inspired by Prince´s spirit, actions and persona or if he´s talking about Prince literally "giving" him a song or elements of it. I have edited my post and put quotation marks around "gave" now.

.

Let´s keep in mind that they´re all obviously very tipsy, too, which is part of the charme of the Drink Champs show. lol

He also mentions Prince at the end when he takes a shot on the “MJ v Prince” question. Clearly he holds P in the highest regard.

Interesting because his early career (remixes on MJ anniversary releases, sampling "P.Y.T.", some of his early aesthetics) seemed MJ fanboy'd out.

So much hate for poor Ye here on the org. lol

This thread is not about him, I was merely trying to find out how much of an input Prince had on the song Jail.

The oposite of love in not hate, it is pure indifference.

To me there is as much input of Prince on the song 'Jail' as whatever input there might've been of Prince on any song by Drake, Bieber, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, and i could go on and on...

just sayin'.

I think it means he is a fan & he's trying to channel prince vibe

So it's like yes & no. No not literally, but its wierd for me to correct someone who probably loved & was inspired by him artistically.
No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

Like all the fanfare for Janelle Monae's track when it came out it's probably going to be the new in-thing for celebs to claim "Prince input" on their latest releases.

Of course..."the Org" and most of its "members" hate hiphop, and they hate the artists that comprise that genre...recurring theme.

Even the few org'ers that love hiphop recognize Kanye's a mediocre, overrated producer that gets undue over-the-top sycophantic praise that should actually go to Mike Deen, No I.D., or one of his other 47 co-producers he's needed to complete a single track since The College Dropout.

And that's just as a producer, as a rapper he's bottom of the barrel.

That was the only one on Donda that I kinda liked. Didn't make any kind of Prince connection with it though. Maybe I'll listen again.
