Prince Alone in the Studio - SMOG/ Bill Callahan

Bill Callahan / SMOG recorded this song well before Prince died, but it hits different now. I often think now about how isolated Prince was, and how he sacrificed to be this person that was all about music to the detriment of every other thing in his life, mostly normal relationships with people. I'm sure this song must have been brought up here before, but I think it's worth reviewing. After reading Duane Tudahl's latest book (and also Mayte's and Neal Karlen's) this is really poignant. Callahan get's it correct, I think.

Prince alone in the studio
It's two a.m. and all the girls are gone
The girls thought they were going to be able
To have sex with him
They wore their special underwear
Once the tracks were laid down
Prince's back turned around
Raspberry headphones on his head
On his ears

Prince alone in the studio
It's three a.m
Prince hasn't eaten in eighteen hours
Dinner's burned on the stove
But Prince, he doesn't even know

Prince alone in the studio
It's four a.m
And he finally gets that guitar track right
And it's better than anything any girl could ever give him
Because Prince is alone
Prince is alone
Oh Prince, you are so alone

And when it's all complete
He feels like a hunter on street
And when it's all complete
He feels like a hunter on the street

Prince Alone in the Studio - SMOG/ Bill Callahan

Bill Callahan is a great songwriter. 'Prince Alone in the Studio' isn't one of my favorites, but I do like it and think the lyrics are poignant and astute as well. Probably not a huge amount of overlap between Prince and Smog fans, though both were/are similarly tireless in the studio.

I think it's very poetic, it gets to the heart of the lonely studio addict that was Prince. Saddens me in some ways, but I think he's spot on.
