My question is this: Did Prince lie about his beliefs? Did he really beleive in Uptown? Was he such a playboy? Or did he really beleive his current beleifs all along?
I know people change, but come on, that's too drastic a change, don't you think?

I believe in his total Playboy imagine, and i understand him - it's fun to a that kind of person who plays with ppl - we're two of the same kind. But whether he believed in uptown or other things - he must have believed in both.

That's 2 good posts, LoveBizzare!
No, I don't really think Prince's playboy image was real. I read an interview with him, which said he was lonely back then and felt the need to surround himself with people and put an act on.
In retrospect the kind of image Prince had back then bared little truth to his actual character. I mean, during his first 20 years he was painfully shy and from 35 onwards, he has been almost introspective.
I think Prince felt that becoming a superstar would make him feel less lonely

Maybe it was a hopeful statement at the time coming from a 20something year old who actually believed what he was saying. Life and experiences caused him to alter his view, or at least refine it.

No, Prince had gone throug enough shit at the time to really believe in it. It was a way to deal with all the shit; being a rebel and more able not to care about the societies rules he didn't agree with, and which cost him so much shit.

It's pretty universal that most people become less idealistic the longer they spend trying to realize those ideals. Or they replace those ideals with other ones.

which is what he is doing and has been doing all along. he is still searching if you ask me.

That quote first appeared in DanceMusicSexRomance. nod

Was Alex kewl enough to repeat the same quote in his book? So we'd get a book of rehashed quotes. Say it ain't so!omg

My favorite Alex Hahn quote is on page 102.

One rehearsal at the Washington Avenue Warehouse degenerated into a shouting match between Prince and Wendy and Lisa, according to Matt Fink. "You fucking lesbians, you're gonna rot in hell for your lifestyle!"Prince screamed."You're a fucking womanizer,"retorted Wendy."You're such a prick and control freak. You're just a womanizing pig."omfg

Between DM and Lovesexy it was fun to follow the way he played around with sex and spirituality on his albums. I think that it reflected issues he was trying to work out personally, but was also manipulated to create "concepts". It got a bit confused after LS, and altho Symbol and TRC are concept albums along those lines, the continuity got lost somewhere.

The fact is, on this site there is a lot of confusion between the hypothetical "real" Prince, and the "concept of Prince" which is the sum of all of his published material and material published about him. The relationship between the two is not that far off from an actor's distance from the character he performs. Or even better, take a stand-up comic. They talk in the first person, write their own material and perform it. But u don't really think that the persona they portray live is a representation of their "real" selves.

Nobody is giving any psychoanalystic Axis I or II diagnosis as yet, it's just a discussion of a public figure. However:

Axis II:
R/O Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Did someone rattle my cage.smile Lied is strong word. The image that WB crafted was so one dimensional. It didn't allow people to see him. Insecurity will make someone think that people would not like what they'd see if they saw the real person. Prince is a real person that had a life before "Purple Rain". The media believed everything that WB fed them like barracuda's. Then the icing on the cake. Prince if you don't go along you will lose your contract. You have to think about your fans. Maybe the far out acts was a way of hopping that the fans would see through it all. And not believe the lies manufactured to create an image that was nothing like the person. The truth is sometimes wilder then anything. Oh if I ever told the truth No one would ever believe me. Right?
sorry if that was over your head...jump up and try to catch the point next time.

Maybe Prince wasn't free at all back in tha day. Maybe he wasn't free to truly be the person he has evolved into now until his split with Warners. Although his change could be considered by some to be drastic, there were periods of time, in my opinion, where he was not in the public eye. Plenty of time to change.
