To me, the eighties Prince music was great: We had 1999, Purple Rain , SOTT, Parade, etc. It's not how I want to remember the good ol' days, it is how the good ol' days were. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with people waxing nostalgia, as long as they realize that what it is. Prince's music of the 90's and 00's doesn't speak to me like the 80's did(I do listen with an open mind and heart). I do realize he has moved on and matured and I have accepted the fact that that may make me put him away like childish things that I have outgrown.

At least back then everyone was saticfied with Prince, you didn't hear all of these "wendy & lisa made him who is" arguments, back then they were just the two chicks in his band, no one thought he was selling out, it was actually a great time to be a Prince fan, as opposed to now

The eighties sucked!!! P and a few indie bands were all that made it (barely) bearable. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

Shit - I was dressed the same and doin' the same shit down in Oz, where I grew up. (BTW, I'm 12 days older than u: June 13, '71). But my memories r tainted by unsuccessfully trying 2 avoid crap like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Wham! etc. and living in a lobotomized ultra-conservative mind-numbing universe. I take it you weren't into much of the New Wave groove. I was trying to avoid the sounds of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Motley Crue but all my neighbors were rockers/heshians/metallers and there was no escapin them sounds... -------------------------------------------------

plus even though it was vapid, after 1984 music would anevera be the same again. The Madonna, Prince and Springsteen triumverate changed it all (the business). "Climb in my fur."

I always wonder can the music industry ever bring forth true legends like Prince, Madonna, Springsteen, or even MJ... I think one of the reasons somebody could outsell them is because there are more people in the world buying music than they were back then which will soon be 20 yrs as of 2004... -------------------------------------------------

Yup as we grow we romanticize the past and remember it the way we want, to justify our current expectations. Add that to the fact that the 80s was a decade of self serving excess to cover ugly realities... you can't keep that ugliness hidden for long, that's why the culture moved on to a more authentic expression with hip hop (before that got commodified). We're in another time of lies... asking the same questions of old are not sufficient. People didn't move on to hip hop for any reason other than it was a cheaper form of music for the record companies to produce. Once they figured out it was cheaper to pay some 18 year old kid from the Bronx than it was to keep a 10 piece band under contract, that was it for the black band as we know it. No deep meanings as to why hip hop took off, simply money. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

I go back regularly. Every time I watch Purple Rain, Wendy gets more and more unlikable and bitchy.

I Remember Growing Up And The Year 1984 Seemed Like The Future. David Bowie Was Responsible For That. The Year 2001
Seemed Like The Way Far Future. 2112 Is The Only Year Off The Top Of My Head That Seems Like The Future Now. I Wish I Look Now Like I Did In 1984, But Know What I Know Now~ Besides I Don't Want To Wait On All The Stuff That Has Been Released Since Then.
