I love this song. I wasn't aware of the rehearsal version until you mentioned it. I found it on YouTube.

Are we sure it's authentic? There's no signing. Could it be fan-made?

We already have a live version of it. To be honest, it's not that great. It is better than the studio version though. I think it was the show at The Louisville Palace.

This is a great Prince song. Humor, and that sense of bugged out sound, the lyrics.

I love the album version of this song. This rehearsal is pretty good with some energy. I wish it had some vocals on it.

Typically, the chorus is the catchiest part of a song, but in the X's Face, I find the verses more powerful. Vocally, Prince brings it when singing the verses. I love the way he sings the first few lines of each verse in his falseto, then switches to his normal register for the last few lines.

I get the racial connotation but I don't understand what Prince means in this context. What's he trying to say? Who is he directing it to?

"Too busy with the jugular and how it taste
To remember what she saw in the X's face"

Sounds like he's talking about her Ex and referring to him (her ex) as the monkey.

I always too it to mean a metaphysical comment on how black people are treated by white people
and perhaps more specifically in entertainment?

like they'll give you a little meaningless quip like 'black don't crack, beige don't age' and that's one
of the things they'll let you have. like feeding some carrots to a donkey to get him to be a litte more willing to move.

In this scenario prince seems to be saying, you still see me and treat me like a monkey and still want me to stay in or get back into my cage after you've let me out for a little bit under your conditions but as soon as it's no longer fun for you, I have to fall back into my place.

Really guys ?

The band isn't tight AT ALL.

And the song itself,

one chord, poor bridges, hard-rock cheapery.

repeat on repeat.

...and as if Hannah can't play drums,

imho of course.

On the other hand, that Hit'nRun Phase One Paisley Park Rehearsal (October 2015)

that follows that vid is somehow a bit better.

But there something with that overall sound, cold..

Not very exciting to me.

A lot of fans shit on this song…… i always liked it…. Of course if you compare this to She’s Always In My Hair or $, then musically, this will be underwhelming. But this is a fun track

I actually think this is a Joshua Welton song… obviously he produced it but i’m sure he had a lot to do in the creative lyric process too… i can see Josh and Prince going back n forth, trying out funny lines to each other in the studio

That's a really interesting take on it, could be.
