20ten Appreciation Thread 20ten is massively underrated in my opinion.

And actually on a relisten I have to admit that the weird complexity of Everybody Loves Me is a bit more appealing than I remembered, although I still feel like the lyrics could be better.

It's a decent album but I think it could have been much stronger.
The first 6 songs are really enjoyable and then it takes a turn with Walk in Sand. I like walk in Sand but it doesn't fit this album.

No it was probably the first sign of the end.

I love the album, a feel good afternoon listen. I think expectations were high and the org was having an emotional meltdown upon the release of the album, but it’s a fun little project. I hope people revisit it more often

One of his worst albums in my opinion. A man of his musical ability (not to mention age) should have been embarrassed putting out an album like 20Ten. And perhaps he was. Which would explain why he completely abandoned any plans for a "deluxe" version. For me, it ranks down there among Phase One and The Love Symbol albums as his "top 3" worst albums (not including ridiculous releases like N.E.W.S. and Kamasutra).
But as with even the worst of his work, there are one or two moments of good among all the bad. Future Soul Song and Sticky Like Glue are the obvious standouts. Add those two songs to Welcome 2 America in place of Running Game and Stand Up And B Strong and then you've got an album worthy of the artist. But as it is, it's hard to think of 20Ten as anything other than a complete disaster. [Edited 10/2/21 3:52am]

Prince knew the albums he was making this decade were mostly uninspired and for no real .purpose other than to get some money in and to stir interest in his touring. They were just money grabbing projects to sell to papers or give away to concert goers. They were not really albums in the sense of a set of songs existing in and on their own merits. But there were always a few decent songs on each. Even a prince barely trying could come up with some good stuff. On this album it was future soul song and walk in sand. [Edited 10/2/21 4:34am]

Contains his best song of the millennium in Future Soul Song so there’s that.

Is my FAVORITE 2000's album by Prince(r.i.p.) from TOP 2 BOTTOM besides "Rainbow Children"....
I'm looking foward to hearing the rest of 20T3N Deluxe that Prince(r.i.p.) offered WBR for a deal that didn't happen until 2014. [Edited 10/4/21 11:01am] "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

"20Ten" is a great album and one of my favorites!

I do deny it having any merit. It's a steaming piece of shit front to back. 2Oten absolutely slapps by comparison, but people like what they like so neither of us are wrong in our assessments. HOORAY

It's got some good stuff on it but at the end of the day it's just another mid tier release.

There's one, I never remember what it sounds like, the sea of everything. I don't think I ever skipped it, but each times it comes, this is so boring my brain thinks about something else and wakes up only at Everybody Loves Me. So in fact, it s like I never listened to it really. I ve had hard time with WaLk in SaNd in the beginning too, but watching the music video made me love it : https://youtu.be/lPfhxQMRTis But the two Walk in Sand/ Sea of Everything in a row was too much to bear. He should have replaced Sea by Cause and Effect IMHO. Also my friends who didn't like Prince especially, loved at first listening Beginning Endlessly and Laydown. I loved Compassion from the start, I think it's a very good opener, full of positive energy and it smelt good a bright day of summer.

If Act of God were played just that little bit faster it would have been brilliant. Sounded awesome like that at SXSW. We are the flowers growin' in God's garden
And that is why he spreads the shit around

I dig most of 20Ten for real...but my preferred way of listening to it is as a combination with tracks from "MPLSound" to create a 9 track, 42 minute Funk/Rock/Dance album with no ballads. It would be the 1st P album without one... Even "The Funk Bible" had one. And '09's "LotusFlow3r" would've just been a single disc, which is one of his best IMO. Here's the tracklist: PRINCE: "Laydown" 1. Laydown 2. Beginning Endlessly 3. Chocolate Box 4. Dance 4 Me 5. Sticky Like Glue 6. Act Of God 7. Lavaux 8. Ol' Skool Company 9. No More Candy 4 U The link for the playlist @ https://youtube.com/playl...j-ry0-9h51 Exiles of the Nation

Sea of Everything and Walk In Sand are so fucking awful that it kills the album for me. I like Everybody Loves Me and can't stand cheesy af Laydown. There was other good material recorded in that period that I wish he put on the album so it wasn't such a bomb. Future Soul Song is incredible and carries the rest of the album. Lavaux is wonderful, I dig Act of God a lot, and Beginning Endlessly is not bad. It is such an uneven experience that it really is quite disappointing.

Just like with Planet Earth, it has a great run of songs for the first half. Take the first half of both of those and combine them into a good longer album. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I actually put Laydown as the first track for my 20Ten playlist. The logic behind it being that if you listen to the album on repeat, there's a long silence before Laydown plays and then it goes straight into Compassion. So on a second run through, it's as if it is the first track. RIP

Its fine, but not his best. Works like a collection of ideas that work and dont work than something full fledged like Art Official Age, PretzelBodyLogic and even Lotus Flow3r.
It is not bad, there are some nice songs like Lavaux, Act of God, Beginning Endlessly and especially Sticky Like Glue. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

rebelenterprise's post features tracks from MPLSound, not NPS. Thanks herb4 for diggin' it & WhisperingDandelions, thanks for clarifying that for me. But yeah, if "Lotusflower" was released as a single disc (or a double with Bria's album if it had to be included) in '09 and then the playlist I posted was released as the album in 2010, with distribution from a major, I know it would've been another "hit" LP. An all uptempo Prince album for the 1st time with no ballads...& an updated return to the so-called "signature" sound? It would've been an interesting selling point. "Dance 4 Me" would've been the 1st single, followed by "Sticky Like Glue" + "Ol' Skool Company"...all three with good psychedelic + trippy looking music videos. With some real backing in 2010, "Dance 4 Me" would've definitely been his biggest single since "Black Sweat", I'm sure. It's just too damn infectious not to be... if the proper promotion would've been involved, of course. And "Sticky Like Glue" would've been a perfect follow-up single. I think I might agree with you, although I think I Sea Of Everything was removed I would change my opinion. Those two set too close together slow the LP down too much imo. On their own they're both great songs.

I'm used to seeing 20ten and HnR1 stated as his worst but never had them packed with Live Symbol. That's an album I don't personally really love despite like 10 incredible tracks but it's from am era most fans defend, and it's so different than the other 2.
