Diamonds and Pearls - 30th Anniversary - SDE?

Prince_Diamonds.jpg

Released October 1, 1991, it was recorded from late 1989 through May 1991.

It went though a couple of configurations.

A November 1990 version was:

  1. "The Flow"
  2. "Daddy Pop"
  3. "Diamonds and Pearls"
  4. "Cream"
  5. "Strollin'"
  6. "Willing and Able"
  7. "Violet the Organ Grinder"
  8. "Walk Don't Walk"
  9. "Horny Pony" - unreleased version
  10. "Money Don't Matter 2 Nite"
  11. "Something Funky (This House Comes)"
  12. "Schoolyard"
  13. "Live 4 Love"

The final verison was:

  1. Thunder (UK only single)
  2. Daddy Pop
  3. Diamonds and Pearls
  4. Cream
  5. Strollin'
  6. Willing and Able
  7. Gett Off
  8. Walk Don't Walk
  9. Jughead
  10. Money Don't Matter 2 Nite
  11. Push
  12. Insatiable
  13. Live 4 Love (Last Words from the Cockpit)

Singles are bolded. "Gett Off" was released on June 7, and "Cream" was released in September, both ahead of the album release.

The album went to #1 in Australia and on the US Billboard R&B chart. It hit #2 in the UK and #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. It was top ten in most every country it was released in.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Where does that November 1990 configuration come from? It's not listed on Princevault (well there is one, but it's different...)

Fascinating how Violet somehow ended up on a configuration predating its recording.

I love this album. I remember the release being reported on the news because it had that hologram cover. Smart move.

Does anyone think that Prince was influenced by New Jack Swing when he wrote Gett Off?

Wouldn't surprise me since NJS was huge at the time. Considering Jam and Lewis had a huge hand in bringing the genre to the forefront at the time, it is no surprise Prince was inspired.

There's many other songs between the 89-92 era that feel directly inspired by it too.

NJS was inspired by Prince, amd Gett Off has nothing to do with what was called NJS at the time.

Honestly, what a bad record this was/is,

imho of course.

Listened to it again, nope. Still don't like it's dated overproduction and light songwriting.

Only ''Money Don't Matter 2 Nite'', ''Insatiable'' & ''Gett Off'' are OK...

to me.

How did Prince inspire NJS exactly? I heard nothing in his catalog like it before NJS went mainstream. I'm curious to understand how Prince influenced NJS because that never occurred to me and I still can not think of an example. NJS sucks donkey dongs, anyway, but I'm curious where your theory cums from.

NJS wasn't inspired by Prince, but Jam and Lewis did bring NJS to the forefront with Janet's 2nd and 3rd and 4th albums.

I'm guessing there will be an announcement tomorrow (Oct 1).

Given the 30th anniversary of the album I think they will really need to release the set in some form this year...

May be they could have one of the side of the lp produce a hologram like that Jack White Third Man Record, rather than etching.

There may or may not be something coming!

Janet Jackson's "Nasty" was arguably the first NJS song, and that was written in 1984 or early 1985 probably. Prince didn't inspire that. I know Prince thinks all of Control was a rip of his sound, but it wasn't.

And to say NJS sucks is short-sighted. Everything from Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel to Dangerous from MJ was NJS. Bell Biv Devoe, TLC and dozens of others with #1 hits did NJS songs.

"Gett Off" was NJS-adjacent, at best. One of my favorite Prince songs, but I've never said, "Oh Prince did this new jack swing song!" when I listen to it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I was pulling dates from Wikipedia real quick and some artwork, and lifted it from there.

The only New Jack Swing type of song Prince wrote that really sounded like NJS was for Martika "Don't Say U Love Me." Other than that D and P, barely scratches the surface of the NJS sound.

Haters frome day 1 to present day...ridiculous.

Easily the smartest career move he ever made - he'd set trends constantly & like all great artists in their creative peak reached the mountain top. He stumbled with G.Bridge, lost huge pride BUT made a tonne of $ from the nude tour to compensate.

Questions then about whether P was still relevant...his attitude was pure P. Getting Frank Dileo on board for the tour was genuis, videos were incredible, amazing new look, mind blowing tour & YES using trends in music to incorporate into his sound to cross over even more. It worked brilliantly.

P was back & bigger than ever.

Now gimme that SDE!

D+P was my first album, I was 10. I remember the hot streak he was on, I always knew who he was but it was like a reintroduction. My mom talked me into getting it and the rest is history.

I am thrilled with this SDE and need it ASAP. I am more excited than I was for the others.
