Curate The Inevitable Next "Best Of" CD

All WB physical releases out of print and while Sony took over the digital on these releases they surely will want to relese a new physical best of collection. The only snag is TMBGITW. In litigation last we heard. How could they release a career encompassing best of without it? Assuming the issue is settled create a REALISTIC 2 Disc Best Of. 75 minutes max each disc. 40 tracks- mostly single versions. Think like a business person not a rabid fan.

Disc 1

1. Soft & Wet

2. I Wanna Be Your Lover

3. Dirty Mind

4. When U Were Mine

5. Controversy

6. 1999

7. Little Red Corvette

8. Delirious

9. Purple Rain

10. Let's Go Crazy

11. I Would Die 4 U

12. When Doves Cry

14. Pop Life

15. Kiss

16. SOTT

17. U Got The Look

18. ICNTTPOYM

Disc 2

'Best of' type releases are to be ignored unless they continin something 'new'.

To me, the known Best-Off Prince releases so far have one thing in comon,

they are particularly bad Prince albums due to lack of consistency.

There are far better best-off albums by others out there, because their sound (for instance) remains the same.

There is a complete lack of 'feel' and uniformity as an album, just from the use of edit versions alone.

As if it was coldly cut and pasted. Not to mention the general poor mixing.

Prince's music throughout his whole career just doesn't mingle that way imho.

They all come from such different albums, era's, atmosphere's etc.

Just look at this random order from ''The Hits 1'', and think for yourself:

I could never take the place of your man

Nothing compares 2 U (live)

Adore

Pink Cashmere

Alphabet St.

Sign 'O The Times

Thieves In The Temple

Diamonds and Pearls

I mean...

By the way, did anyone here ever truly listened to these best-off's in one take ?

It's even wose when (a) new songs() are added, imho.

Why not some kind of continuous mixtape (eg done by Questlove)?

I would prefer that much more. Also more orignal.

Yeah I know it's been done by others, but this could work for Prince's wide range of styles and very different songs.

So, no thank you!

Not for me please. smile

But Prince actually performed NC2U very regularly over the years, and released two live versions of it on audio and one on DVD. He reclaimed that as one of his own.

As far as I'm aware TMBGITW is no longer in litigation, the case ended in favour of the Italian songwriters. It can't be released in Italy without striking a deal with them. How that would affect worldwide releases I'm not sure.

And on YouTube, and Gold Experience would have been re released on CD, vinyl, etc.
Remember Gold Experience was supposed to be the most bankable re release of the Prince Sony Legacy catalogue, TMBGITW has been a worldwide hit, I Hate You was a US #12 hit, and the Gold single was a UK top ten and sold there 120,000 copies.

Exactly. No more Best of please.

We want new (unheard) music.

Why the hell would we need something we already have ?

We all make our own playlists, don't we ?

I thought prince Anthology 1995-2010 was interesting enough, especially since I didn't notice "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" was missing at first!

Well, Sony is wrong then imho.

There are three Best Of's out there, and a couple of other compilation too;

Anthology 1995-2020 - (2018 streams only)

Ultimate Prince - 2006
The Very Best Of Prince - 2001
(Girl 6 - 1996)
(1-800-New-Funk - 1994)
The Hits / The B-Sides - 1993

Most of these releases basically are the ones still available in most wreckastows (over here).

In my opinion, I can live with the fact if they choose to release another Hits package, only if they do it via streaming.

For that i could care less (as a fan).

I also prefer new music.

Or release the known Hits in earlier or alternate versions package.

Something like the Beatles did for most of their records.

This " Anthology " Was a mess amd completely out of touch.
Nobody in the general audience would want to hear such a tracklist, and that's why it never charted anywhere.

If Sony had the rights to TMBGITW, they would have released a physical true greatest hits of that era 1995/2010 at the end of 2018.
They would have sold it a little million, and that would have been good business for them.

There still wasn't Sony Legacy reissues at the time, so it would have been a marketing argument that would be the only way to own some tracks that were completely out of print for decades.

Surety they would have released a dvd with the videos too.

It was a very odd track selection. Emancipation might have made thematic sense to open it, but it's a strange opener otherwise. And We March to close? Again, that surely wasn't included on the strength of the actual music over the dozens of songs that weren't included.
