Did Prince also use stock Linn sound for Something In The Water?

Check out the samples from this new Linn from Mars...

As well as the infamous 777-93-11 beat, there's a snippet of a track called Hi-hat Demonstration, very reminiscient of Something In the Water (Does Not Compute) - albiet without Prince's de-tuning etc.

Did Prince just lift this straight off the Linn stock library and build the song around it?

That was often Prince's way... just build onto a preset, or take a popular song's sound and make it his by adding on to it and twisting it up.

.
He must have used stock sounds (instrument samples), because a user could not load samples himself. But yes, he apparently used preset patterns...

Are these demo patterns taken from a Linn - or examples of this sample library in action?

Even Jimmy Jam said he likes doing that. They get a new keyboard, and he just uses the sounds on it. So the sounds on "Nasty" are a steel drum or something that they used. (I forget off hand.) So it's sorta interesting because we'd tend to think artists don't want anything out there that's typical, but so many use just what's there, and make music from that. And while manipulating a sound is fine, sometimes it's best to let the instrument do its thing, and let it be an inspiration for something.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

If it took 40 years for people to notice, methinks he did a good job.

Didn't he generally put guitar effects on the Linn drums or something? At the time, his drum machine sound was pretty unique, and I think I read several times that he treated his in a specific way, and that he had "trade" secrets he taught Sheila and others in his entourage, but that weren't so easy to reproduce if you didn't know (even though some eventually succeeded in doing so).

.

That said, IDK, because I was deeply surprised when I read in Duane's book that he would usually use presets. I was convinced my whole life that he treated most of his keyboard sounds with effects, because most of the time, his synthesizer sounds were also quite unordinary by comparison to other people's synthesizer sounds.

.

I can't remember what track it is, but there's a song from 83 or 84 and someone in the book says he specifically used a preset (I think they even say which one), and I was like "4 realz?", cos I never heard that specific synthesizer sound anywhere else -and I have hundreds of synthpop, new wave and electrofunk records from the 80's!

.

I guess he had an ear/instinct to select presets that others wouldn't even consider using.

There is a track from the early-/mid-2000s which is basically a preprogrammed composition in a synth that Prince added some flourishes too (and lyrics). Can't remember which one, though.

prince wasnt much into studio tinkering.

you read about guys in the late 60s striving to get new sounds and spending hours to do it, or try new ideas and techniques, prince was not that kind of artist.

he was just into getting the songs down.

he def liked using diff sounds, and not necessarily doing things the same as everyone else, but he wasnt that into 'sounds'.

Except things like "The Black Album" and "Sign o the Times" show a very disciplined mixing style to create a cohesive unique sound, and The Black Album is just filled with tasteful crafted layers of instrument and sound effects arrangements that ran so deep into a branded mood throughout... it's why it'a my favorite album.

"Lovesexy" sounded like a kitchen sink of preset sounds with no taste or discipline... but I think that was the concept, and the opposite of the deliberate more carefully crafted sound of the album it replaced.

I suspect he did spend a lot more time on getting the perfect sound on the songs he seemed to care about... from "Le Grind" with it's looping "grind" noise driving a funk train arrangement to the whip snapping beat on "The Future" / "Good Love" to the carefully minimalized and mixed sound of "When Doves Cry" or "Kiss".... there were some songs he did spend some time on getting a sound.

Now something like "Dance 4 Me" just sounds like he hit the presets to get the song done, and left it.

It seems the latter.
The "777-9311" imitation is called "Purple Groove".
These patterns were made for the library.
