What is this line in "Hide the Bone"?

In "Hide the Bone", there is some chant starting at 3:25.

I don't find it transcribed anywhere.

What is he singing there?

(Hide the bone) {repeat in song}
(Ah yeah, ah yeah) {repeat sample in song}
Hide the bone

(Oh yeah) {repeat sample in song}

I can't hold it any longer
It's gettin' harder every day
The need 4 U is getting stronger
Than my need 2 play

CHORUS:
Playin' hard 2 get is gettin' hard 2 play
How can I be cool fallin' every day?
Playin' hard 2 get is gettin' hard 2 play
How can I resist? Love has got me sayin', baby
"Give it up - bang, bang - before it be gone!"
Hide the bone

Oh, when U whisper that U want me
Press your body close 2 mine
I feel the fire burnin' and I just wanna surrender
I wanna surrender every time, hey!

CHORUS

Hide the bone
Hey baby
(Bone) {x2}

U're goin' 2 ruin my reputation
I'm used 2 makin' all the rules
But I can't control this situation (I can't control it)
When it comes 2 me and U

U're breakin' down my resistance
I won't ever be the same, oh no (Oh no)
U kiss away all my defenses
This time the hunter is captured by the game (Bone)

CHORUS

Ah yeah, hey

(Bone)
Whatever U do - keep it movin'
Whatever U do - don't stop {repeat phrase x4}

Don't stop the groove {x8}
(Let's hide the bone)
Bone {x9} (Let's hide the bone)
Whatcha stoppin' 4, nigga?
I didn't tell U 2 stop
(Let's hide the bone)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

In the long lyrics that you have posted, I don't see the line that I'm talking about.

EnDoRpHn knows what I mean, I think, but you what you have posted does not 100% correlate with what I hear. Also, it's not only this one line, there is a variation at one point:

He sings something like "Check the blame" at 3:39.

I tried to figure this out for years and gave up, I can only hear "ah" and "now" clearly.

Just make up your own,,,, music

Edited to add:

This thread got me curious again so have had a few listens and come up with:

"Check out the way to better ____ ah, check out the way to better ___ ah, check and play it now"

Probably completely wrong but hey ho!

The "long lyrics" I posted are from the Databank Transcription Team, which I'm part of, that transcribes Prince's songs, so moments like these are cleared up.

Maybe you should just listen to the song again.

Have you tried listening to the song again? Prince sings something tha doesn't appear to be captured by the lyrics you posted. Sounds like he's scatting. Perhaps that's why it's not included in the Databank Transcription Team's lyrics -- because it's gibberish and not real words?

EnDoRpHn's phonetic transcription is close to what I hear: Zig-a-duh-lee-uh-git-a-bip-bop-dee. It's possible this line is represented by the lyrics you posted -- but if so, it's not obvious. You can't blame people for not making the connection.

Is the site still live?

It was a good resource but you weren't always 100% correct.

There's always room to review something. The site isn't alive, but it's on the wayback machine. Ted and I were putting some graphics & shit together to relaunch it, but he has some stuff going on and we never got back to it. (That was a year ago or so.)

I think he still wants to relaunch it, but dang if there ain't a lot of stuff to catch up on. I don't have the desire to go listen to all that 2000s and beyond music, but I guess we'll have to at some point.

I came into the site a bit later, and sorta broke ties on votes about lyrics, or offered last minute thoughts. Nothing is perfect, and some things we'll never know for sure. We're humans after all.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Would be great if you guys got back on it, but yeah, that would be some grind to catch up. Always respected the work that was put into it.

Thank you from me as well for your work!!

I asked Morris Hayes on Instagram because somebody wrote he would reply on Instagram.

He did the vocoder in the live version of "Hide the Bone", so I thought he would know.

I already unnerved him with some questions about his sounds, saying I would totally understand if he doesn't find the time to answer.

I also thanked him for Face Down.

He gave me thumbs up and wrote "Thank you, brother", but didn't answer my questions.

Perhaps he's keeping the best questions for a book or so... that would be a dream.

He has such great stories and is such a great story teller.
