Will Prince be remembered more for his live performances than his recorded music, discuss .....

I'd just be interested in your views on this, as someone who liked him from the Parade album onwards, there honestly aren't may albums I'd pick up and play, front to back, from after D&P. I however, did go to see him a few times after this. Your thoughts, and just to add a point, an artist like Stevie Wonder, better known for Live, recorded or a bit of both? My main thought is that, now that Prince is sadly no longer with us to perform, we are left with his body of work, how will it be looked at by future generations and, think 1990's onwards....

I think with Stevie-definitely recorded.

For Prince,I think it depends on your age and level of fandom possibly.

I would say for the average joe public,Prince will be remembered for Kiss,Purple Rain,Raspberry Beret,1999, the Superbowl performance and possibly the guitar solo with Tom petty etc.

For me personally,I was lucky enough to grow up in the 80's with his best lp's and for me that's what will remain with me although I did see him about 5 times live.

I think generally speaking though after Diamonds and Pearls he was mainly viewed as a live performer and one of the very best at that since his records fell out of favour with the general public.

Nope. from DM to LoveSexy, Prince pushed the envelope lyrically, stylistcally, sexually, recording technology, racially etc etc. And yeah he gave a hell of a good show but as good as those shows were, they would be meaningless without the music.

Otherwise he'd just be a really good cover act (or a retro "show man" like Bruno M - who I'll admit has some great tunes but still seems more like a nostalgia act than his own thing).

Yes, you're bang on with that run of albums, regarding Bruno M, he, much like prince, is a product of all that has gone before him. Before Prince we had, Sly stone, Parliment, Santana, little Richard, Stevie wonder , James Brown etc. Bruno Marrs is just doing the same thing and taking all these influences, including Prince with him. One thing that Bruno does, that I wish Prince had done, particulary in the tail end of his life. That's take more care with his albums, I'd have rather had 9 or 10 great tracks than 19 or so, ok tacks with 3 or 4 quality tracks amoungst them. Little Richard said of Prince "I wish he'd put out less music because, a little bit of something, is better than a whole lot of nothing"

Based n history. Prince will be remembered by his music compositions first and foremost.

Without a doubt his recorded output but the Super Bowl performance and the HOF guitar solo will always be part of his highlight reel.

I think his legacy will be comparable to someone like Elvis Presley, who's often regarded in the different stages of his career. For instance, you have his young rock n' roll days, then the campy movies, the '68 comeback and of course the bloated, Vegas jumpsuit wearing days.

nope. hardcore fans will be waxing lyrical about the 2002 joy in repetition or the 2010 version of partyman but most people will not care very much about those. they will only have the album versions to refer to. im sure a good live box set of great alt live versions of prince songs could be put together but it would take some work.

I agree completely. Often people's vision of Prince depends on when/how they became fans.

I think mostly for his performance ability, being able to play a lot of instruments, and his 80s hit singles

He'll be remembered mostly for his recorded music. His 80s run of albums and hits (even for others) is what made him a household name.

No one in the general public knows or cares about his last dozen or so albums.

This, though the RRHOF guitar solo now seems incredibly iconic among the Youtube community.

Luckily, it appears, five years on, that the manner of his demise seems much less prominent in the public mind than it was/is for say Elvis, Lennon or MJ. In Prince's case the music seems to be what matters most to the public.

As it should be and something I imagine he would be very happy about smile .

He will be remembered more for his live performances overall (i've spoken to people who were fans who said they were fans of concerts) and his 1978-1989 output.

the Estate need to release key shows/performances

The W2A concert made in 2011 suggest that Prince was much more than 78-89.

A good question would be what is Mozart remembered for? His compositions-not his clothes-not his performances-his compositions. Prince will be the same in 100 years.

No, he will not be remembered for his live shows over the albums because there aren't many good live shows available to the masses at this point. Maybe future releases will change that, but for now the albums are there and the live albums are not. The live legends will live on in the folklore, but the albums are what matter.

I agree, in part.

But Mozart doesn't have millions of people around the world that went to his concerts and shows, nor were they videoed professionally(in camp) or by people who secretly videoed them

And countless photographs that Mozart(Prince) did not/did have photographed for the sake of that type of rememberance. Along with a couple concert films SOTT, ONA and movies PR UTCM GB

etc

He will be remembered for live performances but he will be remembered for the recorded music much more because people are exposed to it a lot more in their daily lives. People are exposed mainly to the live performances these days in their living rooms in front of the TV. The recorded music is everywhere from the radio in the car to the ceiling speakers in the grocery store. I've even heard it at the pharmacy.

Oh my God, I was watching a documentary the other night about the last year of Prince's life and they were showing various footage of him from that year. When he was still living, I had noticed the decline in his looks and at the time, I figured even though he still looked more youthful than most people his age, even he, was no longer able to hide his aging. But when you see it every day on the internet, your eyes become adjusted to it. Since he's been gone and more his older music has been released and more images and video footage of his younger years has surfaced (which has been absolutely wonderful), my eyes became adjusted to that image again. And Lord knows, I hadn't been watching much of his recent stuff because he began to bore me in his later years. So when I saw him again in the documentary in the last years of his life, it was like sitting in a dark room for a long time and then going outside into the sunlight and going "Damn!". The thinning out of shape fro, the fur vests, those ridiculous looking shades with three lenses, the overdone horns all over the stage sounding like Doc Severinson's "Tonight Show" band, in other words, "Vegas" sounding. It all reminded me of someone else but I couldn't put my finger on it at the time. But yes, it's Elvis that I was thinking of. Elvis was a very handsome, sharp dressing, COOL ass motherfucker in his early years who turned himself into an absolute joke in his later years with the sideburns, Captain Marvel (Shazam) jumsuit.... even with a cape.... LMAO! .... and the overdone Vegas style music.
