ALways liked it. Fav part is mumbling "You dont love me. You're a faker. You just want me for my acres" while greedly munching on Cap'n Crunch!

Despite not being an original...the correct answer is the incredible Soul Sanctuary.

It's one of the top 5 tracks. I still think Holy River is the jewel follwed by FriendLoverSisterMotherWife, Jam Of The Year and Right Back Here In My Arms

It's by far the most annoying part of the whole record. Tap dancing on a CD, how stupid is that. That's something you need to watch, not listen to. It's like listening to a tennis match without seeing it; totally pointless. What was he thinking? The song is too good to be ruined by the silly tap dance, but would have been better without it. Maybe you've missed all the sound effects in P's music since the early albums... I mean I don't know if I like the tap dancing but it helps to paint a musical picture. [Edited 8/17/21 15:29pm]

No, just no. It's one of the weakest in my opinion. I'm glad that some people love it but, as subjective as music is, I really think it's a dull tune. Sorry, I just don't get it. I don't get the paintings of Picasso either so maybe it's my miss π€£ππ€£πβπΉ

I agree with SM here. Pointless noises. Someone could have been tapping on a desk and have the same effect.

sort of related: he got way into stupid, unncessary, and often totally literal sound effects during the mid-late 90s. like i needed those sports effects in the emancipation title track. or the clock ticking in TMBGITW. just gimmicky crap.
i dont mind the tap dancing. its just like hearing any other instrument. but i dont think it was recorded all that well in terms of the rest of the song. not that it matters, its all part and parcel of the 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach of J2J. [Edited 8/18/21 8:24am]

This is what makes Emancipation a good album. While some feel it's bloated, I see it as Prince giving everyone a little something that appeals to their ears.
For instance, I think Holy River is so bland, boring and was so dissapointed when he released that as a single when there were more interesting songs to chose from. But see that is a fan favorite, it's corny as hell to me (I hate his "light rock" songs - see Planet Earth album).
Joint2Joint stuck out immediately for me when they played a snippet of it when he did the Emancipation special from Paisley Park. I had to find out what song that was cuz it just sounded amazing, electric and interesting. I wasn't let down when I heard the full version. This is funny, quirky Prince (my fav). The change up in the middle is so dope! The bass...Lawdt! I agree with Housequake, J2J is fucking amazing!

holy river is a light rock song that is one of his best written and heartfelt - thats what makes it good. later on, he would try and so similar songs, but they were basically emotionally empty, and therefore just filler.

Different strokes...I feel the same way about Holy River. I love just about 90% of what Prince has put out- I am such a fan of his songwriting, Holy River is just so MEH especially coming off of J2J.
Again, this is just my personal opinion. WHATEVER PEANUTBUTTER'S YOUR JELLY!

I think Holy River is touching, the way Prince sang about his beliefs in a clear way, without elaborate metaphor. It's one of his most heartfelt lyrics, and some of his most direct, emotional singing.

Listened again a couple of minutes ago... can't get those minutes back. But again, whatever peanutbutter's your jelly.
Holy River is a no no for me.

Seriously: any sound can be turned into music. There's an old tv clip of Frank Zappa where the interviewer asks him: for how long have you been playing the bicycle? And whaddaya know, he managed to get some musical sounds out of a bicycle! It's a gimmick of course and funny on tv, but not on record. [Edited 8/21/21 13:23pm] If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

I could not agree more, and was about to post about that song, until I had seen your post! Holy River is beautifully recorded, the musicianship is outstanding and the song is sublimely beautiful and perfect. Workin' my body... workin' my body... workin' my bod-ehh...
