Many of the insturment tracks are the same, but yes there are differences in how it's mixed. That rhythmic steel drum/miramba type line is only there in the Crystal Ball version, the boot version has some kind of metalic hit that happens every now and then (offset every 4/4 in a funky spot), and the snare sounds heavier. The boot version also has more of that synth keyboard duck sound in a lower register accenting the rhytthm, and a few more licks of it as the lead (I think). The song was always pretty cool. Freaky stuff only Prince could do.
I do prefer the Crystal Ball version. Even that its mixed so loud - the song sounds excellent played loud and really reminds you that with a good remaster, those old songs sound modern. | |
