Where's The Funk?

So much jazz bar stuff and watered down songs and not enough FUNK..

Surely there's some serious funk songs in the vault.

falloff A real fan of Prince wouldn't be wanting some funk? Hell, that's like dismissing a Loretta Lynn fan if they wanted some country.

That's why it was the wrong choice to release. If he was too old to cut it, then they should have gone back further into the vault and released something from when he was still young enough to cut it. lol

I'm not going to lie, as much as I've wanted Welcome 2 America for years, the "lack of funk" initially disappointed me. But I feel the overall sound of the album fits the lyrical content perfectly. Even though the slower version of Welcome 2 America is so much different to how it was performed, I still dig it. There's no distraction from the words and messages he's sending. To me this is a serious album with a serious message, and having it covered in funk could detract from that. It makes sense to me why this album sounds the way it does, but it also has Same Page, Different Book on it. If I want funk from this album, I will go to that song as it's the funkiest joint on there and has been one of my all time favorite non-album songs since I first heard it. I feel like perhaps it could have benefitted with having Rich Friends on it, which is another upbeat funk song with a semi-serious message at its lyrical core. But honestly? It feels as though Prince made this album to SAY something, to show people injustice and awaken them to the truth, not get his party on.

Yeah sure, Mello like yello.Ok, But as I said, IN THE VAULT. Which means that there's more songs in there other than what he created while in his 50s.

Check the record is mo funkier than same page, different book. Yet check the record is more tamed in it's funk.

Plus who said everything needs to be political or serious? Prince albums have been known to be a lot of things. Such as Musicology and Planet Earth.

Never stopped George Clinton biggrin - he's just turned 80 and has announced his unretirement. His live shows have always hit hard (albeit with an army of talent on stage).

Two points to make here;

If you're calling that material "Jazz bar stuff" you haven't been to a Jazz bar and you haven't listened to much Jazz at all.

If you're asking for the Funk and don't hear it on this record then you're asking for a certain style of Funk music, perhaps the more driving, pulsating Funk. However, there is mid tempo Funk, Slow jam Funk, Vocal Funk, etc. On this record in particular, variations of Funk are prevalent throughout.

Have a nice day!

So we just gonna act like Check The Record don't exist? Dity funk!

Anyway I do agree, would have been nice 2 have some more funk...but he pretty much gave us that on 20Ten with Beginning Endlessly, Act of God, Lavaux and Sticky Like Glue a year before. Put it in that perspective. He NEVER does the same thing twice. This album sounds like he listened to Whats Going On and decided to try some of those old school sounds...probably got bored with it and moved on. Next album after this was Art Official Age...completely removed from Welcome 2 America

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Prince was putting out some of the funkiest funk near the end of his life. Which means you'll probably see it in 2080 lol

.... It's time for us to continue this interview.

Oh...

.... How does THE TIME go about generating such a funky sound?

Pardon me. I know you didn't say "funk.".

.... Well?

Let me just say one thing. Funk is dead.
Funk is something you can learn in school and ain't nothing funky about being cool, ... Grace.

.... OK, but my name is Bridgette.

Oh I'm sorry, ... Grace.

Oh, OH, you depending on the charts to verify what's funky now? Got it.

Okay well, Parliament never had a top 10 hit on the US charts and only had a couple of #1s on the R&B Chart (read: Black music) and just a light smattering of anything in the top 10 or 20. They never had a #1 album either.

Funkadelic did far worse overall, despite having two #1 hits on the R&B charts. Their albums were largely ignored on the album charts.

But - I guess they're not funky cuz they didn't have a hit, huh?

Feels like you just wanna argue for the sake of it, rather than adding to and enriching a conversation. I get that now. Thank you for showing me who you are. I believe you!

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
