do you ever wish there was another album like purple rain?

Not a copy but just another punchy, instantly accessible pop rock album from prince?

I love ATWIAD but I wouldnt have minded if he sustained that 84 moment just a bit longer.

That kind of album, with that much craft and thought behind it is not easy to do. Theres only a few albums in princes catalogue where I think he really vire down and worked hard on each song rather than work from inspiration and it's something I woyldnt have minded him doing more personally

yeah,I think TGE is the closest he came to doing another album like Purple Rain.It has sometimes been referred to as “the Purple Rain of the 90s”.

I dunno, I think between 1999 and PR, the accesible-but-well-written pop albums were enough to satisfy me to crave the weird stuff more. That being said I would have loved an in-between album where The Dance Electric, Erotic City, etc. could have been on the same album and it being just a poppy, funky, epic record with nothing but pure groove on it

Yeah, Gold (the song) is really moving just like Purple Rain, it sounds similar to Purple Rain.

Indeed far from.

No i don't want a Purple Rain part II.

The origianl is so perfect and awesome. Unquestionably unique!

-

I prefer a SOTT or Lovesexy or The Black Album part II.

Or The RainBow Children II, which is in the vault somewhere.

wink

I've called it that a-plenty. And it is just that. Rocking opener, big anthem at the end, a dirty song, a duet, a few rollicking good tunes, a couple of guitar based ones, a great ballad or two. It's all there, plus a bit more.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

shame he didnt start with endorphin machine.

for that, TGE will never be up there with purple rain.

now i like these songs quite a lot (TMBGITW is good but its so adult-contemp/smooth radio FM) but they arent up there with those on PR.

"P Control" feels like a prelude song, not the real opener. It's like when Maxwell hid "Gestos" in the minus-time area before track one, that you could only reach by holding down the back scan button into the negative numbers.

"Endorphinmachine" is the real opener for me.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The fact that you think Computer Blue and Darling Nikki are "punchy, instantly accessible pop rock" is proof of just how good Prince was at getting everyone on his side. Purple Rain is a bonkers album.

Its hard to remember but unlike today where pop has been essentially stuck for almost 20 years, music was changing so fast in the 80s. Largely due to emergence of hip hop and also technology samplying, digital snyths, digital recording etc....

I think another "Purple Rain" would have already sounded dated in say 1986. I undertand and really appreciate Prince's urgency in updating his sound in 85-86. I just wish he'd had either stuck with the Parade/SOTT organic sound and aesthetics for at least one more album before jumping into the more digital compressed and tinny sound that made is first appearence in Lovesexy but really got going production wise in 88-89 (Batman through GB).

I LOVE Purple Rain and I also LOVE that he didn't do another album like Purple Rain. The fact that Parade, which still sounds totally orginal, came just 2 years after PR is one reason I love his music so much.

I just don't see the Gold Exerience as even in Purple Rain's stratospher

There was music he had that was like Purple Rain but not, enough that it could have followed and not be a PR pt II

.

fyi I adore Around the World in a Day

I always wonder if America opened up the album or Paisley Park with the extended version opening, if people would have heard the album differently

Our Destiny

Dance Electric

Can't say I understand people thinking the Gold Experience is like Purple Rain's successor. Interesting to read different viewpoints though.

Not sure I'd want any of his albums harkening back to another album. 🤔
JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...

I hate the song gold. The music itself is too blatent of an attempt to rip off the anthemic feel of the song Purple Rain. And the lyrics?!?!?! "All that glitters... ain't gold!" So trite and cliched. I'm too embarassed by this song to play it for friends.

I firmly believe this tracklist would have been a legendary album. Maybe not how Purple Rain or Sgt. Pepper are regarded. But more as a Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart record. Truly a combination of the bizzare yet beautiful.

Until I find the righteous one...

And "The Ladder" wasn't all those things? or "The Cross" "Anna Stasia" "Live 4 Love" "I Wish U Heaven" "Free."

Strive

I sometimes wonder how Prince's career would have turned out if he just disappeared from public view after the final Purple Rain live show and did an all-killer smash up of ATWID and Parade without the movie in 1986

The problem is there's so much overlap between the two in terms of styles of songs. So much would have to be left on the cutting room floor.

Around The World In A Day

Little Girl Wendy's Parade

Manic Monday

Pop Life

Do U Lie?

Kiss

Girls & Boys

Life Can Be So Nice

anotherloverholenyohead

Old Friends 4 Sale

All My Dreams

(hidden track 99) Others Here With Us

.

Then what? You relegate Raspberry Beret, New Position and others to b-sides?

.

That kind of illuminates why there wasn't as anything as strong and focused as Purple Rain again. There was too many songs, too many outlets and he never took a second to breath.

Around The World In A Day is actually a lot closer to Purple Rain than is often acknowledged.

There have definitely been big discussions on here about that blueprint on ATWIAD.

A side: 5 songs

B side: 4 songs

3rd song is a ballad

Both have an overtly sexual song end of side A (Darling Nikki, Tamborine)

Both have anthems (Purple Rain, The Ladder)

"Raspberry Beret" picks up the storyline of "Take Me With U"

Both albums start with a one-note/chord song. LGC an organ chord, ATWAID some sort of flute or something.

"America" is a romp just like "Baby I'm A Star," and share the same drum pattern.

The sparse nature of "When Doves Cry" is echoed on "Paisley Park."

Many more comparisons to be made.

On that tip:

Endorphinmachine (the rocker opener)

We March (the duet)

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (or Shhh) (the duet)

Dolphin (the guitar driven song)

319 (the raunchy end of side A)

Shy (the stripped down mid-tempo song; although I hate this song)

Now (the upbeat fun song)

Billy Jack Bitch (the romp)

Gold (the anthem)

P Control stands in for Erotic City as a B-side

You could probably shuffle those around a bit if necessary.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
