Oh lord. The more things change the more they stay the same smile People rating a Prince album after a only a few days! It's 1986 all over again. And it seems all the same jokers who wrote off Parade, Rainbow Children, SOTT, and Gold only to claim they are stone cold classics that they were always down with years later are back. Maybe you wan't to live with the record for a bit before writing it off? P albums are complex and tend to grow on you. DIgest it and get back to us.

2,5 for the first day in terms of this rating. I am really glad to have the release even if it isn't a four star one. I purposely didn't listen to any of the songs released prior to the album release, so it actually was better than I expected given the disdain for most of those early releases here on the org. It plays well as an album though it doesn't have any singles. For me on the first two listens, the 2nd half of the album is better than the first half.

I'd give it 3,5 stars. IMO, it's a very solid album with several great moments. My favorite tracks are Born 2 Die, Stand & B Strong, Check The Record & One Day We Will All B Free.

The gospel ending alone (last minute of ODWABF) is worth the buy of W2A.

One star. If possible, not even one star at all. What a load of rubbish.

“Out now, the new release from Shelby Johnson with guest appearance by Prince. Experience the excessive presence of a so eager and still trying to prove to Prince that I can really sing, but in reality not.”

Luckily i have so much to choose from, his best work made in the 80’s.

W2A, a one time listen.

i already post my review on the Welcome 2 America previous thread :

I think the album overall is excellent,

1000 light years from here is superb, maybe the best song on the album

Check the record is also very good but lack of guitar work, a guitar solo should have been added (the singing here reminds me of the singing of Jack Bruce on some of his songs)

Running Game sounds also very good (it sounds like a lost Outkast track)

Born 2 Die is one of the best song on the album but would have been better with more guitar or horns in order to fill the last two minutes of the song which are a little 'empty' in terms of musicianship

those four songs are the highlight of the album for me

Welcome 2 America - the song - is a good introduction for the album

i will add here, as it is the subject, my rating : 3.5 stars

One day we will all b free, and Stand up and b strong, sound too usual and don't add, in my opinion, anything fresh and new, to Prince's discography

2.5/5 - cohesive and polished, but just a bit dull to my ears. Not my kind of Prince. Still glad to have it, though.

'Welcome 2 America' is a very good album. 12 tracks and less than a hour. Unlike some of Prince's other albums (Rave un2 for example), this isn't an overblown affair. It's a very good project that seems to have something for everyone. Definitely a nice addition to the collection. Three stars!

2 stars. First Prince album I haven't purchased. I do like 1KLYFH though. Bring on the D&P, Parade, or Black Album/LoveSexy SDE's.

2 stars. Glad this wasn’t released. It would have been a step backwards. More moaning about record deals (seriously still crying about Clive Davis in 2010?) and faux jazz. Shame as there some nice grooves here but even the supposed “pop” songs are pretty bad.

Sounds like a sequel to TRC or High rather than something that came after Lotus 20Ten. Im skeptical this was ever really considered for release as an album. The best track of that era Black Muse was supposedly not ever on the track list. Also I have a hard time thinking that the political lyrics of 1000 Light Years are the original rather than the ones in the second half of BM.

I do like Stand Up and B Strong. Continuing a trend in his late career where his best tracks are covers. Hope we get a clean version of it.

Yikes - even worse then I thought it be

Shelby seems like a very nice person but man her singing is so grating and she is all over this album

There is a reason he kept this buried in the vault...mediocre at best

Also very intersting to note that this was all recorded under the most devisive president ever Obama

Which says what!?

Shelby makes it a chore to listen to in one sitting. I’ll probably never listen to the album again.

I thought all three singers (Shelby, Liv and Elisa) blended well, but I guess since the recording process was the trio singing into one mic, that was inevitable. My point being that other than obvious rare moments when Shelby is singing solo ('Running Game', 'Stand Up and B Strong'), I'm not able to differenciate her from Liv and Elisa. Are you? Or is it just the girls' voices in general you don't appreciate?

I think it’s the girls voice’s in general that I don’t like to be more fair to Shelby. The last 90 secs of 1000 light years from here are too busy and distracting, for me anyway.

3 stars. I didn't walk away from listening to this feeling that it was incredible or groundbreaking, however, it's a great album with lots of songs that I won't skip. As a 25 year old music fan who never had the experience of listening to a brand new Prince album for the first time, I'm impressed. This is a great collection of music from someone who was over 30 years into their career when he recorded it.

3/5

Some pretty good songs like Check The Record, 1010 and 1000 Light Years.
The rest ist pretty mediocre, Yes is below mediocre and Hot Summer is utter crap and doesnt fit to the rest at all.

The album is miles away to compare with his best.

Don't get the anti shelby comments. Liv and Elisa are singing with her. Shelby has a rich voice and prince clearly loved the dimension she brought. The same for Liv and Elisa. Its a sound that i saw noone complaining about live, those girls and Prince live, especially Shelby, are dynamite. So pethaps its the fact they are all so dynamic, turned up in the mix? For me it felt more of a collaborative album and i think people were maybe expecting less of a prince and friends feel? I think it's a 3. 5* album, enhanced by shelby and the girls, for what its worth.

A definite four stars.

It's a very strong cohesive album; almost a horn-less cousin to HitNRun Phase 2, which I also consider a stellar album.

4/5.

Not one song I don't like. Very solid top to bottom

My least favourite is When She Comes which I rate 3/5. That is an improvement over the hit n run version, 2/5

Favourite song is One day which I would rate 4.5.

Yes, Amazon took products that had previously been super expensive and luxury items and made them affordable and accessible to the masses... in doing so, reducing the difference in standards of living between the rich and poor... benefiting consumers in the lower income brackets... Total evil.

You mean like whole foods prices (AKA wholepaycheck). If Costco carries the same toys as Amazon-it cost 3 times as much on Amazon. Clothes are overpriced on Amazon too. I rarely see a good price. I rarely use them, because 9 out of 10 times it's cheaper elsewhere.

Not to mention part of Amazon will have to be sold off because of monopoly concerns.
