how would you have sequenced ATWIAD to make it more accessible? On my other thread someone said if this album began with America a la let's go crazy it would have been recieved differently.
So I wonder if this album would have been viewed more positively if it had a different start, esp as thetr were no singles before it was released. It's quite hard to rejig tbh but I'd maybe go for - Side 1 America Raspberry beret Temptation Tambourine The ladder Side 2 ATWIAD Paisley park Pop life Condition of the heart [Edited 7/24/21 1:18am] [Edited 7/24/21 3:47am]

I've always felt that those first four songs set up an album that doesn't happen and its a real pity he didn't go full psychedelic and stay there from start to finish. Not a comment on the quality of the other tracks.
Anyway, make it a double album, fuck being accessible, Side 1: 1)ATWIAD 2)Paisley Park (album version) 3)She's Always in my Hair (12" version ) 4)Condition of the Heart Side 2: 5)Raspberry Beret (album version) 6)Tamborine 7)America (album version) Side 3: 8)Pop Life (12“ extended version) 9)Hello(7" version) 10)Girl(12" version) Side 4: 11)4 the Tears in Your Eyes (either version) 12)The Ladder 13)Temptation Maybe include all 20 minutes of America if you want to annoy people IDK, you could probably make it fit [Edited 7/24/21 2:08am]

It starts as it DOESNT go on.

"Do you know how easy it would've been to start this album with a guitar solo like on Let's Go Crazy" -- paraphrasing somewhat, but I just thought it was funny given the idea to kick the album off with a bang a la LGC is exactly what Prince was trying not to do by starting it with the title track.

lol true enough, but its sort of fun to imagine a different version of the album. ive always liked ATWIAD but as an album it is flawed, despite lots of good songs on it. it just feels incomplete as an album, like its missing something to make it feel like a fully developed album. tbh a lot of prince albums are like that, a bit erratic, but this one feels slighter than many others. parade also becomes erratic in the 2nd half, or the last 1/4 at least, but it at least has the preceding 3/4 that feel of a piece. ATWIAD doesnt really have that momentum. its quite fragmented, and i think the sequencing, and the lack of follow through on what it starts with, is part of that.

This was an album that should have never been released. Purple Rain was released in July 84 and still killing the charts. ATWIAD was released April 22, 1985, 9 months later. A lot of ATWIAD could have been on Parade IMO.

Parade rewards for years though, its sprawling while also short, in a way it reminds me of The Top by the Cure, both work on their own internal logic that get better as time goes on. ATWIAD is a wonderful album but i reckon I "got" it on the first listen. I come back to it less often while liking every song individually.

Parade is perfect up to venus De milo. Side 2 doesnt hang together as well. I think he had plenty other songs that would have fit better.

I like the long version of America as well! Love this layout, but I think you would have to have a longer edit (not necessarily the whole thing) of America to fill out side 2:

ATWIAD is my favourite Prince and the Revolution album, so obviously I wouldn't change it. However, I first recorded it of a pirate radio station, Decibel. They played side 2 first and then side 1. So for almost a week (they had a leak, I think, they played it a few days before it was released officially) I thought that that was how it was. I do love the start of America as the start of the album. . But.... I don't think he could've done any better. . And for all those Purple Rain 2 wannahaves... the way the songs flow isn't *that* dissimilar on ATWIAD from Purple Rain. It's just that the songwriting had taken another leap. Someone on here made a great expanded playlist for ATWIAD. I still use it. Paisley Park (12") Condition of the Heart She's Always In My Hair (12") Hello (12") 4 The Tears In Your Eyes Raspberry Beret (12") Girl (12") Tamborine America (12") Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix) The Ladder Temptation (my shortened edit, sped up) Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

As we are playing, on the back of the success of PR, I'd have forced a double album looking like this... Paisley Park She's Always In My Hair Nothing Compares 2 U Side B Hello Mutiny Condition Of The Heart Tamborine 4 The Tears In Your Eyes Side C Side D Around The World In A Day Tempation (edit) The Ladder Pop Life (Full version)

The long version of “America” sucks, let’s just acknowledge that. . Extended jams simply do not get any more monotonous, unadventurous, and superfluous as this. . That said, anyone who thinks “Temptation” would’ve worked better anywhere on the album other than the final spot is delusional. . The sequencing on this album is perfectly fine. . The problem - if there is one - is that a few track needed editing. The intro to “Condition of the Heart” is indulgent noodling and should’ve been axed. The “God confrontation” on “Temptation” is laughable melodrama. If it was cut then and only then the song might work somewhere other than the closing spot. . And “The Ladder” probably would’ve been better off as a b-side, if anything. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

The 12" versions of the songs on this album are remixes, not unedited versions, apart from America anyway, so I would never have them on the album proper.

I must be the only one that likes the ending of Temptation. Yea, it's a bit silly and over the top, but for some reason it just works for me. It closes the album in a very unexpected way. And the whole spirituality/sexuality thing is soooo Prince, of course.

Perfect the way it is. America is the only song I can’t connect with, musically or lyrically. Everything else sounds like a gentle gradient comedown from some pretty potent peyote to me, tapping directly into those half-dreams you get when you’re falling asleep on public transport - seems to me that to mentally handle the PR insanity that very few humans have ever experienced he may have subconsciously retreated back into himself as an instinctive protection mechanism, his body touring and performing physically on (remarkably honed) muscle memory but his subconscious creative mind mind sent on an astral travelling package holiday around the globe like a boomerang sponge, tapping into the great cosmic collective consciousness that plays us all together like a concerto with unseen strings, absorbing and assimilating the entire Akashic record of popular music though some kind of transdimensional osmosis and then transmitting it all back to him on a frequency filtered though the Minneapolis strain of cosmic funk. I imagine album tracking was just as important to Prince as the music. You’d never suggest to Picasso that the nose is round the wrong way. It missies the point of the artistic concept and crestor’s intent entirely. I’m a joyless fucker, I know.

Get rid of Tambourine, The Ladder, the ludicrous 1/4 of the album length Temptation. Replace it with real songs such as Girl, Nothing Compares 2U, and longer versions of Raspberry Berret and Pop Life.

Weird, freaky little songs like Tambourine are a big reason I love Prince. It's not a song you're gonna get from anyone else. How many songs can include whining as part of the instrumentation?
