Genuine concern

I read the org a lot, but rarely post. We are all drawn here I imagine because we have been affected by Prince and his music. I am not a person who earns a great deal of money. Like most people I just about get by. Despite this, last year I bought SOTT deluxe because there was so much music I hadn't previously heard. It was a vast amount for me but I cut back to afford it. Which brings me to the need for this post. I have bought the CD of WTA, and I really like it. Is it in my top 5? Probably not. But it's so good to have a new album. I would also love to watch the concert. But to get it, I'd have to buy a package containing vinyl I'd never use. Why was it released this way? Who made the decision to market it this way and put it beyond the reach of anyone with limited income? Not to speak on behalf of Prince, but isn't this kind of elitism exactly what he campaigned against?

As long as you have his main albums thats the main thing, teh releases now Prince was against, like i heard teh welcome to America album he made in 2010. Some of the albums are on CD or vinyl. I get CD of course.

The music is what's important. The concert is probably available by now on Youtube for free and if not then the Estate may eventually put it on the official Prince page there. I understand that the way that this particular album was released is frustrating to fans, but keep in kind that there's not any additional tracks from the vault that you can only get on the deluxe version here, like there are on the previous deluxe editions of SOTT and 1999, so you're not missing out on that aspect.

I think it something to do with the cameras that were used to film the concerts.
Don't know exactly how to word it but HD didn't come around til 2006 I think,so that's probably why 1999 and SOTT concerts weren't Blu-ray

Welcome to America
Where you can fail at your job, get fired, rehired
And get a seven hundred billion dollar tip

... to spend on Deluxe Prince releases from the estate.

I find it amusing the estate chose this particular release to offer so little value for money. Highlighting the differences between rich and poor.

Film is higher resolution than HD. If you'll look you will find plenty of old movies on 4K Blu-Ray.

But what something was shot on is still relevant. If it was shot on tape, then that will be lower quality and not so in need of a Blu-Ray release.

RIP sad

Maybe because someone working for the Estate saw how many of us complained about getting DVDs instead of blurays on the previous deluxe editions? biggrin

WTA is growing on me more and more. It's unlike any other Prince album. I struggle to find a better word, but it's so 'sweet' The whole thing is so warm. Back on topic, I'm glad they put the concert out on Blu-ray, I just question the decision to make it only available as part of a hundred pound package. If it had been released separately for £25 or so, I'd have bought it day one. I'm sure I'm not alone. I just don't understand the decision on any level. They must have invested in having the Blu-ray produced, surely they stood to make a better return by making it affordable. I don't get it.

I would imagine (but I don't know what discussions there have been about this on here) that because of the way those earlier shows were filmed, there would have been little benefit from having them on the higher resolution format.

In the 80's, all video (not film) that Prince was producing was SD (standard definition).
DVD's are SD, they were the top quality format for SD TVs. A DVD is 720 x 576 pixels at best (and that in the UK in PAL). American DVD's are only 720 x 480

But everything including youtube and Netflix improved picture quality to HD in the early 2010's.
So at that point a blu-ray or movie file in HD became the best format for a purchased video you purchase. A blu-ray is 1920 x 1080 pixels. It matches most HD TV's.

A DVD is a relic format now, since it is not HD. But it seems hard to kill because people are holding on to it. I know some people tried to hold on to their 4:3 SD tvs as well, or even before that people held on to their VHS tapes and VCRs rather than upgrade to DVD.
The thing is, a blu ray player is not expensive these days. Since physical. Media is dying out as popular thing.

Whats funny is now that we have 4K TV's we still have people watching DVD's on them.
That's stretching 720 x 480 to fit a 3840 x 2160 pixel TV!
Maybe a lot of people have bad eyesight and can't tell.
