If anything, he's tried too much over his career to be accessible, instead of being as weird as he wanted to be.

This to the nth degree. I know he wasn’t fond of the word but I’d love to hear a box set of his weird experiments.

No calls for the removal of “Tamborine” will be tolerated.

The song is integral to the album and is one of the essential deep cuts in his catalog.

I don;t know if sequencing was the album's problem - assuming it has a problem which I don't think it does even though I don't love it.

Only thing I would have done differently is have all 3 b-sides on the album, relegated the weaker ones to b-sides and led off with She's Always in My Hair as a single. That song, Girl and Hello are IMO better than the bottom 3 tracks that wound up on the album and, conversely, I think I could find three that would have made better b sides, depending on ones mileage.

SAIMH is a stone cold classic and should have been on the album. I think it would have had the same impact as When Doves Cry as a lead single and would have set the radio on fire in similar ways. "Hello" would have made a great opener for side 2 and I like "Girl" better than The Ladder and Condition of the Heart.

So...

Around the World in a Day
Paisley Park
Girl
Raspberry Beret
Tambourine

Hello
Pop Life
America
She's Always in My Hair
The Ladder

Or something like that.

First Single:
SAIMH/Temptation

Second SIngle:
Raspberry Beret/Condition of the Heart

Third Single:
Paisley Park/Whatever

It's a cool album in its own way but it's a little bit Try Hard (If that makes sense), not the Huge Statement he wanted it to be and was kind of the opening salvo for Prince bascially saying "fuck you" to how the normal game was played, at least after he got super famous anyway, and totally exhibited his propensity to subvert expectations for which he became renknown.

I don't really think the album as it stands suffers any from a sequencing or pacing issues, really, so much as certain tracks just don't have the "oomph", gravitas or quality that Prince thought they did and I'd largely leave it as it stands if we're keeping all the songs as is. Mixing the order around doesn't really change much, at least for me. It's a fun album to talk about for a myraid of reasons and it has a lot of interesting shit going on with it but I'll just say it's a good thing for his career that he didn't follow up 1999 with this one and nobody really brings it up too often as an all timer even though a lot of hardcore fans love it.

I think Parade was a far more successful attempt at his own brand of psychedelic funk and song writing, where he was able to out his own stamp on that genre and not invoke immediate comparisons to the Beatles and the Stones (Sgt Pepper and Satanic Majesty). In fact, a lot of people were let down and put off by it, as my memory serves, but it's hard to say the record sucks because it's pretty cool. Reminds me in some ways of Led Zeppelin 3, which a lot of Led Heads were down on at the time (and some still are) because it didn't sound the like the stuff they'd come to expect.

TL/DR: Only thing I'd change is switching up the album tracks with the b-sides and getting SAIMH into the forefront.

On my other thread someone said if this album began with America a la let's go crazy it would have been recieved differently. So I wonder if this album would have been viewed more positively if it had a different start, esp as thetr were no singles before it was released. It's quite hard to rejig tbh but I'd maybe go for - Side 1 America Raspberry beret Temptation Tambourine The ladder Side 2 ATWIAD Paisley park Pop life Condition of the heart [Edited 7/24/21 1:18am] [Edited 7/24/21 3:47am]

I've always felt that those first four songs set up an album that doesn't happen and its a real pity he didn't go full psychedelic and stay there from start to finish. Not a comment on the quality of the other tracks. Anyway, make it a double album, fuck being accessible,
Side 1:
1)ATWIAD
2)Paisley Park (album version)
3)She's Always in my Hair (12" version )
4)Condition of the Heart

Side 2:
5)Raspberry Beret (album version)
6)Tamborine
7)America (album version)

Side 3:
8)Pop Life (12“ extended version)
9)Hello(7" version)
10)Girl(12" version)

Side 4:
11)4 the Tears in Your Eyes (either version)
12)The Ladder
13)Temptation

Maybe include all 20 minutes of America if you want to annoy people IDK, you could probably make it fit [Edited 7/24/21 2:08am]

I like the long version of America as well!

Love this layout, but I think you would have to have a longer edit (not necessarily the whole thing) of America to fill out side 2:
Side 1) is Approx 22 minutes (possible)
Side 2) is Approx 10 minutes (maybe make an ~ 12:00 edit of America for the album to fill it out)
Side 3) is Approx 19 minutes (assuming you mean the 9:00 version of Pop Life and not the 'remix')
Side 4) Is Approx 16 minutes (possible)

Maybe take ATWIAD and make it the last song of side 4. That would really round out the length of the sides. smile

Yes, an extended but not that extended version of America would work well for me, good thinking! Either that or open up side 2 with Condition of the Heart if we're struggling to fit it all on side 1. and I definitely mean the extended version of pop life and not the remix!

ICNTTPOYM would have fit this album nicely.

Add She's always in My Hair

Remove "Temptation". Worse Prince song of the Golden Era.

End with the Ladder instead (but its still a poor man's Purple Rain)

Perfect the way it is. America is the only song I can’t connect with, musically or lyrically. Everything else sounds like a gentle gradient comedown from some pretty potent peyote to me, tapping directly into those half-dreams you get when you’re falling asleep on public transport - seems to me that to mentally handle the PR insanity that very few humans have ever experienced he may have subconsciously retreated back into himself as an instinctive protection mechanism, his body touring and performing physically on (remarkably honed) muscle memory but his subconscious creative mind mind sent on an astral travelling package holiday around the globe like a boomerang sponge, tapping into the great cosmic collective consciousness that plays us all together like a concerto with unseen strings, absorbing and assimilating the entire Akashic record of popular music though some kind of transdimensional osmosis and then transmitting it all back to him on a frequency filtered though the Minneapolis strain of cosmic funk. I imagine album tracking was just as important to Prince as the music. You’d never suggest to Picasso that the nose is round the wrong way. It missies the point of the artistic concept and crestor’s intent entirely. I’m a joyless fucker, I know.

Well for starters wasn't 95% of the album recorded before Purple Rain was even released? It wasn't written with Purple Rain insanity in mind, although possibly it was tracked that way.

Secondly, I can suggest all sorts of stuff to Picasso, but the fact is he's dead and it can't be changed. This is just having fun. Playlisting is about creative as doodling on a piece of paper, and about as harmful as well.

also, prince was a popular music artist. pop music is never just about pure artistic intent. and prince was definitely NOT an artist scared of success or who shied away from it, or had an awkward relationship with it. he loved it. courted it, wanted it. even when it was difficult to process some of what came with it - eg large crowds, or lack of privacy, solitude. this is a guy who started having a bodyguard (who would stand in between him and his band) arguably BEFORE he even needed one! similarly, he made his post-success album, his 'comedown' album, before he even had anything to come down from! he had it all mapped out, and lucky for him, it panned out as it did. had PR not been that big a hit, im pretty sure ATWIAD would have been quite a different album.

And, the "i before e" thing is sorta ridiculous. I would think that a grown person could see a word and think, "well, that doesn't look right," and correct it. Yet I still see grown ass people who still think freinds is right. Goddamn, it was a TV show. Look it up!

I took the ending away from it, and someone sped up the tempo (preserved the pitch). It's about 30 seconds shorts (coming in at 4:30 instead of around 5 minutes), and it's a bluesy bop.
