Blasphemy in purple: Adore is overrated.

Stick with me here. I am not saying Adore is not a great song; The vocals alone are mind blowing. What I am implying is that the song is not the greatest song in world history that many think it is. There are many better Prince songs. Songs like Irrisisble Bitch are more clever. Ballads like Old Friends 4 Sale are more breathtaking artistically. Adore is wonderful but certainly not a top ten song. I even like Eye Hate U and Dolphin more. Adore is a standard ballad. It is not the avant purple masterpiece Rock Hard In A Funky Place is or as deeply personal as Condition of the Heart, a far better ballad. Little Red Corvette destroys Adore. Sure, Adore is better than Kiss. Adore is better than We March. Adore is better than Blue Light, but duh. Come On is even better than Adore! Blasphemy you say? I have ears people. You can kill me now lol

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Wolfie87

I wrote this on a reaction video for Adore on YouTube comment section:

Made in 1986/1987 on analog equipment. Except the horns, although arranged by him, EVERYTHING from the layered background vocals, not a choir, but layered vocals to the piano organ throughout the ENTIRE song to the perfect drum programming is arranged, produced, composed and performed by Prince, all by himself.

Now, this is not only the best ballad of the 80's period. This could definitely be of all time.

THIS is one of the reasons you just need to get into Prince. Ethereal upon ethereal production that sounds as fresh today like no other music from that decade. The harmonies and dynamics are timeless in this cut from, again, 1987(!!!!)

With so many options, it's hard to rank Prince songs. But my Top 2 favorites haven't changed in over 20 year and Adore is #2.

I don’t agree that ‘Adore’ is overrated nessesarily.

I will say that I personally prefer ‘Crucial’ and would have preferred that to have been the closer on SOTT.

I'd say it was definitely a slower mid-tempo, ballad-adjacent knocker.

"Condition of the Heart" didn't find its way onto urban radio despite no single.

Sorry, but I agree with Wolfie87 and Soul...."Adore" is a classic. R&B stations played that song in heavy rotation on their "quiet storm" episodes. That Hammond organ and kick drum is like a heartbeat throughout the whole song. "Raspberry Beret" and "Purple Rain"?..Now THOSE songs are overrated..to the point where I stopped listening to those ages ago.

In the coda

"Adore, you...
Can I talk to you?
Tell you what you mean to me...
Anything (?), you wanna do...
I'll be your eyes, so you can see
I wanna show you thangs, I show no other
I wanna be *bass, more than your mother
More than your brother...
I wanna be... like no other,
If you need me *background vocals* I'll never leave"

... and so on and so forth. Prime Prince. Just so good.

How many great songs did this friggin guy have? Jeez.

Who cares. 1986 was probably the greatest year in the history of music, singularly thanks to the songs P recorded. Adore is one great song among many.

I didn't like Adore so much back in '87, I skipped it a lot. I was just looking for funk, the harder the better. Later I started to appreciate some of the ballads too, Do Me Baby was the first and then I found a love for Adore as well. Nowadays I love Adore, although I have overplayed it a little. It is certainly not overrated I think.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

RODSERLING

Comparing Adore with Irresistible Bitch lol
And overrated by whom, since it was never released as a single ( but got a lit of airplay and streaming). We re not talking about a huge hit, almost nobody knows that song besides US urban listeners or Prince fans.

Whenever an artist tries to do a Prince ballad these days, the result's DNA is from "Adore". I think it is the culmination of all the hype assigned to Piano & A Microphone 1983. The best gospel/seduction type song since the days of Al Green.

I agree that a choice between the pair had to be made, and I love "Crucial" just as I love the rehearsal of "Electric Intercourse" which was bumped by "The Beautiful Ones" I assume.

"Crucial" ain't all that. I don't know why people fawn over it. It's tinny, ear-piercing, and not that interesting.

"Crucial" is amazing. The version on crystal ball is the one I prefer but the one on SOTT deluxe is pretty good too.
Now if you wanna talk "ear piercing",then look no further than some of the ballads on the emancipation album (friend lover sister mother wife, saviour)

Stop with this silly talk. Adore is one of his top songs. Crucial is good, but nowhere near Adore.

LOL, if I am interpreting the ear-piercing comment correctly, the mastering on Crystal Ball was very loud, bright and his falsetto was especially sharp on the ear.
