The Time Remaster?

I see that the debut album has been re-released. On HDTracks, it's called a 'remaster'. Can anyone confirm that this album was actually remastered? I heard nothing of the sort when it was first announced.

If anyone knows how it sounds, would really appreciate some feedback.

Romeoblu

My vinyl copy arrived this afternoon. I just sat down to play it but unfortunately the main album was badly warped so I didn't play it and have packed it up for return.

I did read a couple of positive remarks about the remaster on a Facebook group

Hi Joey.

I'm at the office so I can't do an A/B test right now, but I can confirm that despite the volume getting a healthy boost over the original issue CD, there doesn't appear to be any visable clipping in the wave form. I purchased the HD files through Qobuz last night (24-Bit 96.0 kHz) and there is visable spectrum data stretching up to around 45-48khz, so there is more data on this re-issue then has ever been on a CD or download in the past.

Sorry I can't offer better insight right now. I'll have a proper listen when I get home. wink

Oooh this is interesting. Can you update us once you've done some more O vs Rm comparisons?

And also what kit you are using to do that comparison, if you are willing to divulge!

Source kit and headphones / IEMS.

If you have any graph comparisons on the O v Rm too, that would be great to see.

I'm not expecting miracles and everything that we know about Prince's recording process along with the details in Duane's awesome books state (repeatedly!!!) the audio quality was of little concern to him as long as the tape was rolling.

Sorry one more question - does anyone know if this remaster is the same used in the Japan Rm CDs issued in 2015?

Many thanks Vault Curator. I am looking forward to your thoughts after actually listening. What you said is encouraging.

The new vinyl version was remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot. I haven't had chance to play it yet.

All I can find about the mastering of the new digital version is that it was done "under the supervision of Morris Day" and is listed as the 2021 remaster on digital services, so I don't know if this was also by Hersch and Inglot. I have listened to the new digital version and to me it's by some distance the best version I've heard yet. There's way more life in it than the original CD, and it's not loud and squashed like the 2015.
