"Manic Monday," but WTF?

Susannah Hoffs sang "Manic Monday" on CNN on their The Fourth In America Celebration.

I don't know what it is about her singing here, but she's just horrible.

She does this weird Bob Dylan sorta thing at the end of each line. I get trying to change up a song a bit, but goddamn. It sounds horrendous.

Is it just me? Thoughts?

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I understand what you say. It is 'her' song. this style supports the violins that end the 'sentences'.

The urgency or manic doesn't come across. It is to laid back for my taste/. I assume The sunday before wasn't that epic appearantly (Priorities change with age. In youth a good sunday-marathon may be important and as elder you already happy when you can hold your pee).

Sounds great to me, nice violin and vocal flourishes. Hoffs looks great for 40, forget 60

Look at it from Susanna's point of view: She's probably been singing this same song at every concert she's performed since 1985. She needs to spice it up somehow, because you can't not sing it.

I can get that and appreciate the artistry. but songs also are their Own entity to do them justice.

This Version has certainly her flavour but I miss something in relation with the song and lyrics. It feels off. I don't mind different Versions.

that said...it still beats the appolonia version eek

Same here. If there's something I don't like about the performance it is that she has her eyes closed most of the time. Other than that, it's fine.

All the musicians sound very sad, and not in a good way.
Crappy strings arrangements.

The bridge was fantastic.

The melody on violin was fantastic.

So is Susannah,

please stop the hate.

Thanks smile

Never said anything about the bridge, the violin, nor Susannah as a person. So... thanks?

And I don't mind the more laid back mood to it. I don't think Prince or The Bangles version had an urgency to it or anything. It was always just a poppy little song. It was the way she sang the end of each phrase. It's like she was meshing a Prince song as if Bob Dylan was singing it or something. Just felt off mostly for that reason. I dug the unplugged nature of it overall.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

This sliding way of 'singing' at the end of each sentence ruins the melody I think.

It's not bad. Decent musicians.
I think it sounds desperate, so much melancholia.

If you hadn't said anything, I never would have noticed. She's singing live - versus the recording we've all heard for 35 years. And she's 62. Losing most of your estrogen can do a real number on your voice. (I know whence of I speak.) She sounds great.

In other words, there isn't a thing wrong with this performance. shrug

I do think her voice is really good. It's matured and sounds nice. But that thing at the end of each phrase drives me nuts. Like, "six o'clock already I was just in the middle of a" is fine. "Dreeam" is like nails on a chalk board. haha

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Ehhh, not quite the same for me. I never felt like Sinead was doing Dylan in NC2U. Susannah was trying to make it ... well, something by doing that to the end of a phrase and it felt like a stunt rather than a nuance.

I gave it another listen and I still don't get the Dylan comparison.
