1988 was Prince at his peak as a guitar player? I used to think that Prince improved on guitar in thecpost 2000 period but when i listen to his playing from 1988 i think that his tone phrasing and overall lead playing was at his peak. It seems like even though Prince played great stuff latter on he kind of lost that sophisticated creamy tone from the 1988 period.

Had that out if control, punch you in your face, fuck everybody energy as well.

I actually quite disliked Prince using the cloud guitar on everything in the 1987-1989 period. That guitar, while visually adorable, had a weird tinny, screechy sound, no depth. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

you watch him on something like The Ultimate Live Experience tour, and he's just at one with his guitar. This was my first exposure to Prince live - and have been a major fan ever since!

Dublin 95 and radio city 83 sound boards....anything else?

He was absolutely filthy on the axe during The Gold Experience era and Musicology tour. (Insert something clever here)

i agree. when you see that Dortmund show and he rips into the end solo of LGC while just calmly walking across the stage, you know that he knows the guitar sounds great. So smooth and powerful "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

I don’t know anything technical about guitars or guitar playing. But there is something about the tone during the Lovesexy period that makes me melt. Especially the after shows in that era. Also, am I crazy but is the solo in Batdance out of this world?

That's the first time I've heard anyone talk about Rave 2000 as part of Prince's guitar playing peak. Personally, I loved what he did in the Blues Medley, and on She's Always in My Hair (although much prefer what he did with 3EG on that one).

I find Rave era as his ultimate low regarding guitar playing

The Arsenio performance of She's Always in My Hair was great, and similar to all the live performances of the era - but it's only half the song. I love the second half just as much from that era.

Good question banishedone I think his playing in this period, from what I've seen and heard is his peak . I've studied his playing for years and this period he is playing inspirationally. The scales ,the melodies, the sound which I love is so euphoric. The cloud and mesa boogie sound incredible. What I found most interesting is his style of playing in this era especially small club jams is he uses his ear to create melody and go outside of the box with scale choices and tired pentatonic use. To the best of my ability I sat and learnt this and was blown away by the sheer depth of musical skill he has on just my imagination. I don't another guitarist who has such soul ,energy, melody and sheer bravery to be so free and it just sounds perfect on this particular performance. Most musicians and guitarists always compare to nauseam but prince thought differently about guitar to other guitarists I feel because it was a tool to really show he felt .not to show off or just playing fast tired solos that really most pros can do . Heres my effort any way of the song https://youtu.be/M4KJBHVg3SM
