Rappers that have sampled Prince

Over the years I've heard only a few rap songs featuring samples of Prince music. The most prominent example is 2pac, who within one album - namely, All Eyes On Me - mined Prince's music for two samples. On his last album, Makaveli, 2pac yet again samples Prince in the song To Live and Die in LA. Apparently, 2pac was a big Prince fan as he also did an unreleased version of Pop Life aptly retitled Pac Life. Recently I heard a Mobb Deep track that has Havoc and Prodigy flowing on If I Was Your Girlfriend and much more recently I came across a Ja Rule track titled Bitch Betta Have My Money that I would swear samples Kiss uncredited. Apart from these tracks, I was wondering, are there any others that may have slipped my radar?

Arrested Development sampled the word Tennessee (from the song Alphabet St) in their hit single of the same name. Prince waited until the song was topping the charts to make his move, that one word cost Speech & Arrested Development $100,000!

One song that rarely gets mentioned is Grandmaster Melle Mel´s "What´s the Matter With Your World?" , a 12" single he released in 1989. The other rapper in that song is Van Silk.

Not only is the title taken from Prince´s Pop Life but the song also contains a sampled "Oh yeah!" from Sign of the Times. Back then (before the Biz Markie sample case ) rappers didn´t care that much about clearing samples. I´m not even sure if Prince ever knew about the song. It was a bit of a low profile , under the radar release. I think it was also on one of the Police Academy movie soundtracks.

Decent song for its time.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I remember that Ja Rule song from Rush Hour Soundtrack. I hadn't become a fan (of P), but was aware, heard song n was like "man, somebody owe that man some money", as there was no sample credit. Lol @ Tennessee tho smile.

Recently Slim Thug released a single called "Black Queen" using "Do Me Baby" as a major sample in the track.

I actually thought that my ears were mishearing something as I would have expected the sample to have been properly credited being this such a high-profile soundtrack.

If you can find the Questlove Wreckastow DJ live stream from last year's 1st lockdown, he played ALLLLL the songs that sampled Prince. A bit of an eye opener.

Missy sampled the "Gett Off" scream, I think, in one of her songs.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Tupac sampled Pac couple of times. He definitely sampled Pop Life.

The underrated classic "Wanna Be A Baller" sampled Little Red Corvette.
Bone Thugs' "Change the World" also sampled LRC.

Although I did read (somewhere?) that Prince wavered his right to part of the royalties (or copyrights?). So he really just wanted to prove a point and didn't want to totally destroy the band!

In the music video, during Krayzie Bone's verse, the drums in sample is much more prominent. My brother is a huge Bone Thugs fan and hipped me to that.

Don't forget the way Audio Two flipped the "17 Days" sample for MC Lyte's "Paper Thin" or the way Public Enemy flipped the guitar solo in "Let's Go Crazy" for "Brothers Gonna Work It Out".

Nice and Smooth's "No Delayin" ("Starfish and Coffee"), 2Pac's "To Live and Die In LA" (Do Me, Baby"), and Jay-Z/Kanye "Welcome To The Jungle" ("When We're Dancing Close and Slow")

Sir Mix A Lot sampled Prince a few times:

"Batdance" in "Beepers,"

"Head" in "A Rapper's Reputation"

and the "shut up!" yell from "Housequake" in "Lockjaw."

The last two songs are on the "Mack Daddy" album with "Baby Got Back" on it and "Beepers" is from the album before called "Seminar."

Actually, it sounds like he also sampled "Electric Chair" on another song from "Seminar."It was the one after "Beepers," I think, but I could be wrong on that. It sure sounded like it to me, though.

Questlove had a couple of hours podcast about songs with Prince samples,

last year in the first part of the lockdown.

Super nice to hear.

Would love to hear it back.

Brilliant idea, man!

You know what? Why don't you just stick to Google if you are looking for info about Prince, while the rest of us discuss Princely matters on Prince.org...

For real, it will save you from a lot of stress, you won't have to be irritated all the time about those dumb people here who aren't willing or able to use Google like you do.

BTW, I appreciate the Prince news that you post sometimes. I just don't understand why you often feel like you need to belittle people?

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I know out here in the Bay (Area) RBL posse sampled Soft and Wet on one of their songs from the "Lesson to be Learned" album. The song is "I Ain't No Joke". It hasn't aged well at all. Even 25 years ago it wasn't that good.
