Let's Rate An Album's Tracklist: Around The World In A Day

This time, let's rate the songs of Around The World In A Day. List the songs, #1-#9, in order of preference.

We're not talking about the flow of those songs in a particular order, nor are we talking about creating an alternative playlist or tracklist for the album.

Rate the songs on the album in general. And it doesn't mean the last song is horrible. Just means maybe you prefer the others before it. This is not saying there's a dud on the album or anything. Just order of preference.

Here's my list:

  1. Pop Life
  2. Temptation (minus the ending)
  3. America
  4. Tambourine
  5. Paisley Park
  6. Around The World In A Day
  7. Raspberry Beret
  8. Condition of the Heart
  9. The Ladder

Yeah, they're all excellent songs, and it took me a long time to get into the album as a whole. I sorta went from PR to Parade. But over time, it's totally grown on me.

Technically, I guess "America" is a live version, but yeah - that video version is the bee's knees.

I probably should listen to the album again objectively, I haven’t played the last two songs again after my first time listening to them, and that was an eternity ago.

1. Pop Life
Easily my favourite song on the album by a considerable margin

2. America

3. Temptation

4. Paisley Park

5. The Ladder

6. Raspberry Beret

7. Around The World In A Day

8. Tambourine

9. Condition Of The Heart

I've put them in this order but really, aside from the top 3, none of those rankings are really set in stone because I only like the top 3 songs and the rest are instantly skippable for me. Definitely one of my least favourite Prince albums.

And not even one song of that list stands above any of the ATWIAD tracks in quality, originality,

nor in Creativivity, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent.

I always really dug the autobiographical nature of "Pop Life." When I learned the "echo" on the lead vocal was actually two different takes, one slightly behind the other, I was just dumbfounded. This coming off the heels of something very echoey and reverby like "Another Lonely Christmas" was just me thinking, "Oh, he really likes that echo shit." But just a year or two ago I find out about it being two different vocal takes. That's nuts and genius shit.

I did edit the ending off "Temptation" and brought it to an end without all that weird ethereal god-talk on it. It just feels embarassing to listen to, still.

Someone on here made an expanded ATWAID setlist, which worked really well.

Around The World In A Day (earlier version with bass, I think this was my choice)

Paisley Park (Remix)

Condition of the Heart

She's Always In My Hair (extended)

Hello (Fresh Dance Mix)

4 The Tears In Your Ees

Raspberry Beret (New Mix)

Girl

Tambourine

America (longer mix)

Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix)

The Ladder

Temptation (I used my edit)

8. Around the World in a Day

1) Raspberry Beret - i love this album SO much and I hate to go with the biggest hit as the "best" track but I just have to in this case.

.

2) Pop Life - so close to number 1, maybe if it was the long version

.

3) Paisley Park - this is where it gets tough... but this is such an anthem

.

4) Condition of the Heart - maybe without the introduction it would've flip-flopped with 3.

.

5) Tambourine

.

6) Around the World in a Day

.

7) America

.

8) Temptation

.

9) The Ladder - take this off and slot in "She's Always in my Hair" (maybe the sequencing wouldn't quite work) and the album goes even higher

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

The Fresh Dance Mix is Sheila E's mix that was released in the US, right? I really dislike that version. I greatly prefer the Extend Version, which I believe was released in the UK.

Anyway, Here's my take:

  1. Pop Life
  2. Condition of the Heart
  3. Paisley Park
  4. Raspberry Beret
  5. America
  6. Tambourine
  7. Around the World in a Day (if were were talking about the earlier version with the bass I'd rate it much higher, but I just don't get into the album version that much)
  8. The Ladder
  9. Temptation
