What are your favorite highlights from the Montreux 2013 shows? I am thinking of showing off some of the monteoux concert from 2013 to a casual prince friend of mine What are your personal favorites? I can't get enough of the performance of "The Breakdown*

Having just recently watched those shows, I have to say that I'm still thinking about the end of the third show where Prince plays dj and gets people up on stage to dance and shows everyone a great time doing it. If I remember correctly, the third show is the only show where he actually plays instruments too so anything from that would be a good choice.

Loved all 3 shows. It would be difficult to choose. Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end

Show 3 because I prefer Prince in guitar mode than band leader mode. But the aftershow jam is the one I keep returning too. It has perfect Prince cameos in it. 2 on guitar and 1 on keys. My password is what

Maybe you could start a thread about 2009. The OP was asking about 2013. . Show 3 is my favourite and The Love We Make the highlight. ALthough the new swear-free Days Of Wild grew on me and I enjoy it in shows 1 and 2

Days of Wild show #1
The end of show #3 was great

I'm fond of the guitar-less Purple Rain that he does in tribute to Claude Nobs - particularly the "that's all I'm gonna say about, but there's one more thing I want to say, alright?" moment.

Love from Night 3
It really made me appreciate what a jam it is. That bass breakdown and horn parts. Man, I hope somewhere in the vault there is a hour long jam on Love like Hot Thing.

2009 makes these 2013 shows look like a carnival act, tbh. not my thing really. too show-y.

2013 is all about the horn arrangements .. 2009 was about renato butchering some great prince songs with his boring elevator muzak .. skip night three as detroit is a much better show for his guitar workout

The 2nd show has my all time favourite version of Nothing Compares 2 U. Not just because they sound good but more the maturity i see in Prince. He seems so genuinely himself. The look he gives when he jokes about Shelbey 'hey hey hey she's married'...that smile he does after he sings that...super. Then there is the part where the trumpeter with eyes closed misses the fact Prince is about to wind down....as P appraoches the mic, the trumpeter starts up again...Prince's look is just so cool. He just smiles and allows him to finish. Love it.

- Never liked that show. Comes over too much as wannabe. Only remember well the promissing start of ''When We're Dancing Close And Slow''. Such a beautiful song barely ever played live. - A pitty Hannah played (boring) drums on this one. John Blackwell would've flourished it up in all silence. His embellishments are just so great for Prince's smooth songs. -

Agree (not even close)...and Austin 2013 better than Montreux 2013 IMO. Something seems off about Montreux 2013.

- To me it's plain and simple. Prince made a mistake with creating an all girl hard rock band with no soul or spirit. And that's my humble opinion about these lovely girls. I'm sure every single one of them is fun to hang with (and talented). But eh sum of them as a group with Prince I find suffers with lack of joy and finesse. I try to watch these shows, but they all seem very 'tryout made' and exhausted. Prince hardly has fun, his uninteresting attitude and autopilot kind of playing says it all (to me). Like it is written all over his face; ''give me the money and leave me the fuck alone''. Sorry guys. My hard opinion. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

i don't think i've ever had a moment watching or listening to 3rdeyegirl where i was like "wow they kick ass" in the way i've felt watching other bands.

I get them mixed up but I saw one show where Prince never played or so much as touched an instrument and it was the most boring Prince show I can recall seeing.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
agreed. it's just not interesting to me at all. if he was having fun, that's great, but it's like... i want the musicianship and real art from this guy, not a dance party. just get a handful of people who can play their instruments well on a stage together and play, no need for backup singers and 100 piece horn sections.

- He may have played barely an instrument, know for sure that every detail, arrangement, rearrangement, setlist, show organization, lightning, sound, whatever... he did it all. I always try to remember that. I know he is a good guitar player etc... but I also pay a lot of attention to everything we experience. Cause IT IS ALL HIM. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)
