Background vox on ICNTTPOYM 1979

If you’re listening with good headphones, and you reeeeeaaallly listen for if, you can hear the many background vocals/layered vocal tracks in “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 Version)”

I particularly love the background vocals during the lines
“He left her with a baby and another one on the way
She couldn’t stop crying ‘cause she knew he was gon’ to stay…”

The falsettos in the background…. Just amazing. I don’t think this harmony was used on the SOTT version or any live version (maybe i’m wrong, idk) but yeah the harmony hear is just so beautiful. Young, soulful, falsetto Prince is my favorite because although he wasn’t as skilled a singer as he got later on, you could feel the words more in my opinion

I wish the estate would release the stems/multi tracks so i can make my own mix(es) with the other vocals more present, that’s how obsessed i am lol

If anything it wouldn’t be on the Dirty Mind SDE but on the Prince SDE since the original version of the song was recorded during that album’s recording sessions.

The estate is never going to release stems. There won't be a new Sampling Series. How "Let's Go Crazy" stems leaks, I don't know. And don't get me wrong - I'd love to have the stems to "When Doves Cry" or "Computer Blue" or - frankly - "Something In The Water."

And let's assume it was Prince on the harmonies.

Princevault says in 1986 that the 1979 version was reworked with additional recording. So, was it fully re-recorded for SOTT, or does the SOTT version include some of the 1979 tracks including possibly those harmonies?

QUESTIONS!

It hasn't. But it has been remastered a few years ago. Bernie Grundman confirmed doing it. I have the vinyl - sounds a bit more smoothed out, but still raw and demo-y.

It was completely re-recorded. Prince famously did not track his drums to a click so his tempo would fluctuate in ways that the drum machine (or Fairlight on the SOTT version) wouldn’t. The tracks simply wouldn’t line up. These days you could digitally alter the speed to match whatever, but Prince used tape till the end for drums and vocals.
