agreed. it's just not interesting to me at all. if he was having fun, that's great, but it's like... i want the musicianship and real art from this guy, not a dance party. just get a handful of people who can play their instruments well on a stage together and play, no need for backup singers and 100 piece horn sections.

He may have played barely an instrument, know for sure that every detail, arrangement, rearrangement, setlist, show organization, lightning, sound, whatever... he did it all.

I always try to remember that.

I know he is a good guitar player etc... but I also pay a lot of attention to everything we experience.

Cause IT IS ALL HIM.

Yeah, I get that but one of the main things I like about the man is how great he is at so many different things. I need that axe in there somewhere and the keyboards too. Bonus if he hit the drums or did some percusssion. Especially since he couldn't move and dance like he used to. The band leader approach just didn't really do it for me.

Oddly, I didn't think I'd like the final Piano and Mic shows for just this reason (not enough range) but the ones I heard were pretty great and at least he was playing something.

There are too many horns in this show, it is horns overload too much of a good thing. The Piano and mic show was boring too, if you want to see someone rework their old songs on piano watch the Elton John Elton at 60 Madison Square concert, it's a masterpiece of piano work and I am not that big a fan of his music.

and Cause and Effect. Maybe because it is so much better than the studio version. I also really like the instrumental middle section, with among other the subtle bass playing of Ida!

I noticed I choose mainly the songs that are not performed that often.

Odd, because I unexpectedly found myself enjoying the P&M shows I've heard, whn I was expecting not to.

I love Elton John so I'll go check that out but I'd assume it's better just by virtue of Elton overall being a better piano player than Prince. But one thing they both have going for them is a tremendous long library of hits and songs that everybody knows that they can cull from, along with some really good deep cuts they can mess around with and break out to switch things up.

Absolutely true. What a fantastic concert.

I actually became a Elton fan in the mid eighties.

And kind a lost track in the nineties. But man, he still has it.

Saw him live three times. Always great concerts.

Both shows and eras have some good moments just they show two sides I dont much like. One is over maximal, overloaded prince. The other is uninspired rock quartet prince. He can do a small band setup, but the kind of rock he got with third eye gigl was just not at all interesting. Often just big dumb rawk.

That said the version they did of breakdown live and certain other songs was perfect. So it might also just be what he was writing in their case, not them.
