American Bandstand Performance

I've just witnessed the American Bandstand performance of I Wanna Be Your Lover and Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad.

I know he was only 19 at the time but the interview section between performances made me cringe! He looked so uncomfortable. Maybe that why he hardly did any interviews after that!

Are there any other early performances like this kicking around?

There is another tv performance I can remember...It's when Prince performed on a tv show called In Concert which aired on Friday or Saturday night...

I don't remember whether or not there was an interview involved, but I do believe it is a fantastic performance...and, of the same songs you've mentioned, I think...(I was too young at the time to really understand yet what I was seeing and hearing "live"---for the first time at that...he was just a naked man, sounding great, singing and dancing all over the stage on tv...lol...and, I was dazzeled... biggrin)...I haven't seen that performance since then...

Perhaps someone has it recorded and will get a copy to you... smile

Good luck... smile

two things about the bandstand fiasco:

1) p wasn't 19 like he said he wuz...he wuz actually 21 (yay, fully legal!). guess he wuz still on that 'turn-age-back-two-years' trip that warners set out 4 'im...child prodigy, whatevs...

2) p's reaction towards dick clark seemed 2 be born from an amalgam of a couple things: firstly, the whole 'talk a lotta nothin' approach wuz a premeditated stunt that p did...secondly, dick made p sorta miffed with that "this isn't the kind of music that comes from minneapolis, minnesota" remark he made, and rightfully so. don't matter where u come from, one can still get their funk on. rolleyes thirdly, p wuz still in his 'phuc the media' mode and wasn't 2 keen on givin interviews.

imo, that whole semi-interview wuz the best interview p hardly gave. classic, funny shit there. evillol as 4 other performances within that time frame, he made his first teevee appearance on the midnight special a couple weeks prior 2 bein on bandstand. i've got that performance taped...nuffin special about it, really...save 4 p's outfit. mr.green

hope this helps ya! geek

I think you're talking about The Midnight Special not In Concert. The In Conert(AKA The Ryde Devine) performances were just a few years ago,1998.On the Midnight Special,he was introduced by two dudes and he lypsychned the same two songs. I think he was wearing those zebra vest/bikini briefs w/ stockings ensemble.

can't spell worth a damn edit

At that time, it WAS NOT the kind of music that came from Mpls. Anyone old enough to know what the fuck they are talking about would know that.

1) sure it was. took a little time before it wuz etched in stone and became synonymous with p's homebase, but u gotta remember: he wuz at the stage where he wuz settin certain buildin blocks that would make it so. u must not have read my statement correctly, sir.

2) it really doesn't matter if you're older than me or not...hell, all that aside i act a heckuva lot more mature on this site than u ever have, lamont, so don't even go there, eh? confused

Right, Dick was telling the truth. Infact when Dick said that Prince jokingly said 'where'?
So I don't think that offended him, like everyone thinks it did.
