the album that will make ppl/critics better appreciate the npg era is The undertaker
I dont think he ever quite nailed a good representation of this band on the records released as he could never resist adding more But if the estate released this I think ppl will better understand what this particular era was about It would inspire some reappraisal of the 93/94/95 period I think And it would also make ppl appreciate his guitar work too Fingers x the estate release it one day how prince wanted to [Edited 5/28/21 16:08pm]

I would vote Exodus. That is a truly underrated album, and to the best of my knowledge iit didn`t even get an official US release until it crept unassumingly onto the streaming services.

Agreed! I find side projects like The Undertaker and The War more interesting than his albums from those years because you can hear the band play without sound effects and beats and segues that distract from the music. If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

He really created magic whenever he, Sonny & Michael got in the same room together.

Exodus doesn't really show you anything you dont know about prince or the npg, good as it is Undertaker shows you what the npg could do as a BAND

. Sonny's weak weak weak weak vocals will ALWAYS keep this album from achieving much recognition. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

It just needed Prince as the lead singer. Sonny just doesn't sell the music the way Prince can. That album would probably be my favorite of the 90's with Prince as lead vocal. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

The NPG era. I need a definition of what era that is, as Prince kept using the name for so many different projects and as his ever-changing backing band. There are so many different formations, it's kinda hard to chose. >>

Come is a better album than Around The World In A Day

Liking Prince's music in the 90s is only a controversial topic for new fans. Prince put so much music that spanned so many genres that this is not surprising. Other artists with expansive libraries have the same discussions. See David Bowie's fandom. Some people actually like Bowie's 80s and early 90s material even though people only ever talk about the 70s and Blackstar. [Edited 5/31/21 21:18pm]

No one cares about critics' thoughts. Besides, there's not much to be praised about Prince post 1980s.

I guess Prince wanted the NPG to be like The Time: a way to release his most funky music with another frontman. He first tried it with Tony, then with Sonny and for the last album, he gave up and decided to do it himself. If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

All they have 2 do is release Exodus with the Prince vocals and it's a rap. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

...love 90 prince and the npg. But this project is just meh...boring as hell, weak vocals (dolphin, bambi) annoying guitar... have u ever realised how much gain his mike must have had.. he is almost whispering the vocals ... no powerhouse vocals by the man , weak

My answer would be "The Gold Experience"...If they ever clear up whatever issue there is with "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", that's an album that could be a hit all over again... probably even bigger than it was in '95. From what I've seen on the "Tube", the public really digs stuff from this album + era. So, with more exposure, it probably would really end up being looked at as the "Purple Rain" of the 90s as some describe it. Gotta include the full version of "Billy Jack Bitch". "P Control" is more relevant now than it was back then in a way in this WAP era. Even "We March" is more relevant now. Gotta get "Days Of Wild" on there as well. And re-release the TV special that went along with it... [Edited 6/1/21 11:20am] Exiles of the Nation

I think that Exodus AND the Undertaker are both really good answers. They've turned a lot of heads in my circles among rock and funk fans who didn't think they liked Prince. And even from a few who DO like him. They're both really good examples of the type of stuff he seemed to keep buried throughout his career for various reasons. Like, nobody who's never attended an aftershow really understands how good he was at just jamming.

You're talking about less than a minute out of the entire album. And while I think Come, the album, is very underrated, it's not better than ATWIAD.

Ah yes, Exodus all day long. It also deserves a shoutout as one of the most accessible, commercial sounding albums he's done, along with Purple Rain and Dirty Mind. Hallucination Rain also sounds dangerously close to dream pop, a genre P said around 2014, 2015, he would never touch!
