He could have "milked" Purple Rain for two years, releasing two more singles, and an European tour, and sell it to 35 millions worldwide. He preferred to fuck this with releasing ArAround the world in a day when Purple Rain was still in the top 10. He was upset with the commercial failure of Parade/UTCM? He disbanded the Revolution and went solo again. He thought Lovesexy was his new Purple Rain : it didn't work, and went to Batman. Graffiti Bridge using old tracks was a flop? He changed his formula, started from scratch and went popular again. Lovesymbol was a flop? He went solo again with Come. Then he tried to have big numbers quick, releasing a triple album to go multi platinum, he fucked the RIAA with the tickets sales of Musicology to go multi platinum again, he wanted to sue the UK charts because his 3.5 millions of Planet Earth counted for zero copies, he released two albums the same day that went into the top ten... But it's true that besides a few exceptions ( D&P, Lovesymbol, Emancipation, Musicology), he never played the game. He wanted big numbers, but he should have had more than one life to promote everything he wanted to release in such a short amount of time. We are talking about a guy who sold quickly 15 millions of Purple Rain, had already recorded ATWIAD when he performed a 2 millions tickets-tour, then shot a movie the month after, after having recorded Parade. When UTCM was released, he was already deep into SOTT. What happened in two years of Prince life worth a decade of any artist. Who could handle that, and why? Not even talking about the albums he made for his protegees... Still, most of the so called fans here are still trashing him for his wonderful work in the 90's. Other big artists in the 80s were able to have big-selling albums because they kept a “gap” between their releases. It created a lot of hype and anticipation. When a new MJ or Madonna album came out,it was an EVENT.If you flood the market and release albums very fast, the excitement level won’t be the same. Of course,Prince didn’t care about this.He simply wanted to release as much music as he wanted.Nothing wrong with that, but this is exactly why the 1992 contract was a mistake. He wasn’t willing to play the game.He wasn’t going to cut back on his releases. WB must have thought this contract would made Prince reasonnable. The 5 millions mark to reach implied that Prince won't release an album unless the former had already sold 5 millions, and that he would do everything for that. Technically, there was that "gap" In 1993 for Prince. [Edited 5/27/21 21:48pm]

IDK how well it did but I am grateful it happened because I discovered some of Prince's greatest songs on the b sides disc and many of those songs had been vinyl only releases up until that point.

It was another contract for the Hits, distinct from what he signed in 1992. Prince received like 5 millions$ in order for him to accept the release of The Hits, and absolutely for NOT getting involved with the tracklist, besides giving some unreleased tracks. The 3 sets sold a total of 10 millions worldwide.

I don't about more successful, but I always thought it was called the Love Symbol because P really was that vain. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

"MNIP" was an awful single choice. The first proper single should have been "7" after the "Sexy MF" advance teaser. I diagree with others about "The Morning Papers". It was single material but by the time it was released Prince had lost interest and didn't really promote it. "The Max" could have been a club hit. "Blue Light" would have been a good pick as a single. When this album came out,I read somewhere (maybe Uptown magazine?) that “Love 2 The 9s” and “The Max” were being considered for singles.I’m guessing that Warners had big plans that were later cancelled when the released singles didn’t do as well as expected.

The Max might have been played in clubs, but I don't see much hit potential in Love 2 the 9s. The Continental may have been a good single. If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

After 7, in replacement of Morning Papers, if it was to be an uptempo : Continental was the best choice left of the album. If it was to be a low tempo : And God Created Women was the best choice left. But I doubt these would have made top 10, but surely better than Morning Papers

If the sticker on the front of the album and the commercial at the end of the Sexy MF home video are any indication, The Continental may have been planned as single. . Agree on The Max. It was cool live on Arsenio and may have done well as a single and on radio

Just re watched the arsenio hall show performance from 1993.Asise from "my name is prince",all the songs performed sound better than the album versions, especially "Blue Light".If you all don't remember,I suggest you watch it again immediately

I've always dug "I Wanna Melt With U". To my ears, it feels like a 90s update of the "1999" album sound. Totally different than anything else on the album. No horns...back to the synths. There were several throwbacks like that on the album, like the finger symbols on "7" & bells on "Damn U" that were a throwback to the ATWIAD/Parade era. Some folks don't like "Arrogance" + "The Flow", but for some reason, those remind me of that era as well. Like a 90s update of the Parade Tour sound. I played "Soul Psychodelocide" right after these two songs...Worked out great.
I love this album...my second favorite of the 90s only 2nd to "The Gold Experience". 3rd would be "Chaos And Disorder". [Edited 6/8/21 20:39pm] Exiles of the Nation
