What is your opinion of the "3 chains o' gold" film NOW?

I watched it last night as a matter of fact.I first saw it back in the middle 90's when I was maybe 6 or 7.Although the storyline isn't great it is interesting and the music videos make up for it.
I use to wear the vhs tape out back in the day and I cherish it a lot, even more than the Purple Rain movie.
I tell all my prince friends about the 3 chains film and all of them say they never heard of it.
Maybe it will be released on dvd one day or bluray
What are your favorite highlights from the film?
For me,it is "The Max"
Seems most of the NPG didn't care for Mayte much

I still have my old VHS tape, but no machine to play it on. I really enjoyed this back in the day. Prince and Matye both looked so good and the songs kick ass! I really wish for a DVD version someday. I hope we don't have to wait forever for it. neutral

It seems to me they didn't care for any of Prince's women too much, especially his wife as they were a distraction from the music and less "air time" for them.

I never saw it, besides the 9 music videos.
I hope this would be released in dvd/blu ray one day.
I always envisionned Lovesymbol as a potential movie, before even I knew it was one.

I wonder if we'll ever know why the songs were butchered edited in such a nonsensical manner, and if a complete version exists.

.

My theory is that WB said let's put it out for a quick cash and that, since the album's promo was over for over a year, making the release totally irrelevant at that point, P messed with them by providing a purposedly unusable edit of the film.

.

But this is pure speculation. The only thing we can be sure of is that the version we got isn't the version originally planned (and possibly finished) to accompany the record, since the ending was clearly reworked to accomodate the name change and the "WB wars" (none of which had yet occured when the album was released in late 92).

I mean, it's just as likely (maybe even more likely) that Prince submitted it chopped that way on purpose like every other video release he ever did both with and without WB, lol.

They were indeed awkward edits on the D&P video album, and Acknowledge Me on the TBE video album. But I really don't see the point in doing such agressive edits on 3COG. This said, it's true that with P, u never know...

.

Prince most likely didn't edit these all alone in his room, so obviously whomever edited it for/with him will one day speak, and tell us more about that process, as well as if a more comprehensive version was ever made earlier (I'd assume one was ready by the time the album was released, but IDK).

.

There's also the mystery of most of the album's second half being skipped, as if Prince got bored along the way: were videos made at all for the missing tracks, then skipped, or weren't they even made at all?

Well Kevin Smith did say a paisley park employee told him prince had maybe a hundred finished music videos already in 2001.I have a strong feeling song videos for "and God created woman",arrogance, and so on are there
Also the full version video for "the Continental" is out there

For D&P and Lovesymbol, there are so many music videos and tv performances... How did he find time to do that, between studio recordings, rehearsals, concerrs... 1991/1993 were crazy years.

I loved the VHS back then but was equally baffled about the edited videos. We knew full videos existed for likes of MNIP and Sexy MF so why edit them down for his own movie.

.

Regarding Acknowledge Me; I guess we don't know if he made a video for the full song or was he intending to release an edit where the spoken piece from All My Dreams comes in, as it fades out in the TBE

It still bothers me that there wasn't a real music video for 3 chains o gold in the film, instead we got a boring epilogue.

There are two version of the 3 Chains of Gold "movie" right? The ABC broadcast version and then the one released on VHS and laserdisc? I have that laserdisc.

Which video collection had the end credits with Prince watching the VHS tape that Mayte sent him with "That's Incredible" childhood footage? It's all a blur now. Prince is in a dark bedroom or somthing and has popped the tape in...

I've never heard of a TV broadcast of 3COG, let alone of an alternative version.

.

Aren't you confusing it with The Ryde Dyvine? http://princevault.com/in...yde_Dyvine

That one's the Gett Off video EP.

The ABC broadcast was Ryde Dyvine and Act I

I had this on VHS back in the day. Similar to 3COG with some extra bits on the band. I seem to recall footage of maybe Sonny having driving lessons

Good catch!! I completely forgot about that one because for some reason I never saw it neither back then on VHS nor since online, never found a rip online, nothing. The Ryde Dyvine seems to be much easier to find. I will try and ask around for Act I.
