"Purple Medley"

Finally heard this today. It's pretty cool. I like how he slipped "A Love Bizarre" in there. Thoughts?

"Slipped" sounds like he was being sneaky. It was his song, as were all the songs in there. Nothing "slipped" about it.

I remember hearing it on the AMA's, and just being fascinate with it. It was a while later I found the CD single, and loved the extended cut. The B-side mix is okay, but I prefer the long original. Also loved the artwork.

The video is cute. Nothing deep, but a fun put-together.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I played the single to death back in the day. I think it was well put together and interesting hearing the re-recordings, like Purple Rain especially sounding fresh.

.

The little mash-ups of Peach/Cream and Irresistable Bitch/Sexy MF are cool

Prince played "A Love Bizarre" regularly live (e.g. Parade and Lovesexy tours, etc.). It has always been his song. wink

I wish he had played "Yellow" from time to time.

"...i never meant 2 cause u any sorrow, i never meant to cause u any PAINT..."

lol

there was a point during his later live shows where the sample set became so predictable (for a little while) that i started thinking 'pretty soon he's just going to put on THE PURPLE MEDLEY and go backstage for a snack and a shit and then come back and continue the show'

yeah, but this is pretty fun to listen to once in a blue moon. the long version. the b sides mix is ok too.

I really loved this when it came out because I wasn't a jaded turd back then. It was fun to hear him reimagine this stuff.

You were under a rock since last century?

It is rehash. So why bring it up again?

Please explain.

I've always enjoyed the transistions, and the whole celebratory Vegas-y vibe. But that dustbin-lid drum sound is extremely irritating.

I'll explain it to you: Prince actually gets new fans from time to time. To new fans almost everything is new and they are excited to talk aout it, just as you were at some point in your life. It's entirely possible to have been born this century and be 21 years old, so perhaps this person was still in daddy's nuts last century. Don't worry about things you don't understand. Nothing on this website full of Dunning-Krugers like yourself is worth getting upset about.

First off, nobody owes you an explanation. The OP clearly stated it was their first time hearing it today...so if that makes you so upset maybe it's time for a timeout or maybe a nap?
.
To the OP, I dig this song! Everything after Purple Rain is really strong with how he transitions between songs. Glad you got to hear something you haven't heard before and enjoyed it!

Udo thinks he's a shareholder on the board of directors for the Prince Estate so he wants answers for everything including why OP brought up such an old song.

I think Prince fans forget that not everyone is their age nor has had the same experience with Prince and his music. The "how can you not know this?" and "I know everything about Prince, why don't you?" creeds are short-sighted and obtuse. There are fans half our ages, or less that are discovering Prince's music. And if it took us 40 years to listen to everything as it came out, imagine the task ahead of a new fan who has 39 studio albums over 100 singles, videos, compilations, special edition extras, etc. in front of them.

That's why people bring it up again. It's a first for them. A better response would be, "I know, isn't it great? I remember when that came out. I was just so in love with it." or similar, instead of being the proverbial wet blanket on someone's parade.

Be nice to each other, people. Life is short. In just a few decades, you won't be there to enjoy Prince's music. Or anything else, for that matter.

.

Anyway, I bought "Purple Medley" in 1995 and I still listen to it from time to time. It's not essential. But it's quite fun when you're in the mood for it. Even Kirky J's remixes. I'd like to hear a full version of that "Shockadelica" remix one day. cool

Wrong.

Udo does not think about this.

It is simply rehash to start about 'new' things that are not really new and are 25+ years old or so.

It would have been a different case when the OP e.g. would have used a set of nice headphones, etc, to dig deep in the audio and really hear something new.

Your utterance is simply a projection of what you think about me.

Answers in simple earthly matters should be no problem.

I probably only had about half a dozen Prince albums when this came out so it was great to hear all those snippets of stuff I hadn’t tracked down yet and remixes of other songs.

op, when we this came out it was such a new sound for some of these songs it was an exciting listen, so to come across it now I imagine would be a similar kick. Lots of people here forget the excitement you'd feel when you'd get. Anew project or tour, which is strange to me. Don't let that bring you down. It's like finding a buried treasure.

I like it in general, but the drum beat could've been better - it was a forerunner to the plastic sound (Emancipation/NPS) or the Batdance section that was removed with that weak ass thin beat. The only track I like that thin beat on is Sex - really works for that song.

Just wacked it in Garageband and worked out it's 126bpm - added a basic live drum pattern (called 'Scientific Method - Graham') and it starts to sound quite awesome!

Timing goes a bit weird after Purple Rain (I think it's still 126bpm - but it gos out of time with the first section (Batdance to PR).

Needs a bit of work to bring it all in line...

[Edited 4/26/21 14:01pm]

Ok the 2nd part is 125 bpm (I think) weird that it slows down a beat! I found a simple Linn pattern and overlaid it - sounds so much better with a phatter beat.
