Why do magazines insist writing that Little Red Corvette was released in 1983?

It's from the album 1999 from the year 1982!!!!! Several rankings of songs have 1983 in parentheses. Sometimes even the entire album 1999. Drives me crazy. Years of certain events are really important to me. And it's not like the album was released in late December of 1982. Get it right please.

It was released as a single, and charted, in 1983.

Find other things to worry about?

Because it was from 1983, which is how songs or singles are referred to - by the year they were put out as a single. If they weren't a single, they'd be referenced to their mother album and its year.

Phase3

Because the song was released as a single in 1983 even though the song was already released on the 1999 album in 1982.
Are there any other songs in the prince catalog that were released in a different year than they were on the album?

Probably "Take Me With U?" I think it was the last single from PR, after "I Would Die 4 U," which was released in November if memory serves.

Also, Emancipation spanned 1996-1997.

Scandalous was released as a single in 1990

(or at least it didn't peak until 1990)

Hmmm. I see your logic. And it kinda makes sense. But he produced those songs in 1982, with the technology from 1982, not 1983. What I DON'T like however is putting that whole album as a 1983 release, which some writers actually do. Singles release, fine. But that album is not from 1983, how much you try to argue against me.

I believe some confusion came about because the 1999 album was re-released in March of 83.

When they play I Would Die 4 U on SiriusXM (80s on 8), they have it listed as 1985. I have the same complaint that you do.

There's actually a scene in the beginning of Dr. Strange, where he's in the operating room and debates with someone else about when a song came out . . . IIRC the other person quoted the single release date and Dr. Strange quoted the album release date . . .
