Prince's Jackets Coats & Trenchs

I've been looking at video footage and photos and found myself zeroing in on his jackets/trenches and the designs and details.

It started with the SOTT jean jacket that Cat made for him, then the Bob George trench and on and on

I'm looking for closer images of the Bob George trench, there are some interesting symbols on the back and front.

Regarding that jean jacket:

When I was in the Navy, SOTT came out. I was just fascinated with every part of it. The peace sign, the cross, the hearts, peach and black, the whole aesthetic.

I had a jean jacket, and decided to alter it. Mine was a regular color denim, not faded like Prince's. I went to the Navy Exchange, and bought a ton of gold safety pins, and some yellow thread. I pinned them on the jacket, and sewed them to reinforce them. I had different pins including a yes pin from the Lovesexy Tour, a big pink peace sign, a black heart (which were actually earrings from a store), three of gold plated necklaces (that had their color worn off) that I put around the sleeve of one arm and secured them at the shoulder, and other stuff.

I never failed to get a compliment or comment on it when I went out wearing it. It wasn't identical to Prince's, but it was 100% inspired by it.

I miss that jacket. Luckily, it was caught on video, as I wore it once when a friend and mine and I made a late night "we're bored" video to "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals. lol

A year later, I had a trench coat I died purple, and wore it everywhere. My family was infuriated I "ruined a good trench coat." Ruined? It was an upgrade! I also altered some white pants I got from Jeans West, by buying and sewing huge black buttons up and down the outer seam on either side. I found some very playful and large buttons at Hobby Lobby, that were pretty much the same type he had on his SOTT & Lovesexy clothes.

Ahhh, the 80s.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

According to Cat, he was given that Bob George coat from George Clinton.

If that's true, I wonder if it's one George once wore. If so, that'd be a picture to find.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the photo was that it looked like a P-Funk outfit...

Yes the 1980s

That sounded like you had a lot of fun putting that jacket together

That Graffiti Bridge jacket reminds me of the one Janet wore during the All For You era; in the video and on the MTV ICON show. Sort of half there, half not, disappearing sleeve, short and cropped. (Janet wore it better, btw. Fite me.)

Prince's GB period was sorta sloppy in some ways. I didn't dig the clothing aesthetic at all. The long hair threw me a bit, the Farrah hair with a Beyonce fan in front of him. (Of course, a lot of that started during Lovesexy.) Then, he'd have those one shoulder jump suits with a half shirt on under it, and it'd get all bunched up on the one side with a shoulder strap, but the other side just sorta hung there. Just felt tacky and uninspired. I just think of Levi's words, "Damn, this is embarassing."

I didn't mind the Asian characters, but I never saw the point of it in relation to the movie or anything. Any "foreign" flair (aside from the ruffled shirts) really didn't show up in a big way until the prince era. Then it disappeared again.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah, it looked more sensible with Janet. But the jacket signifies an era with both artists that I lost interest in.

I wish I didn't read this lol, because now I doing extensive searches to find George Clinton with either the trench or those shades.

I'm wondering if he designed it for Prince but wasn't specifically his own. Because Prince is a smaller dude and that jacket fits him like it was tailored for him.
