Check out the "Atmos Mix" of When Doves Cry, you can hear all sorts not audible on the normal version, for example Prince doing a kind of vocal chord warm up type sound before he starts the first verse. It also sounds great

Interesting... I don'thave a subscription but wonder about what might sound different here on such a minimal song.

He says "starvation." Those of us on the DTT transcribed it. It's not too hard to hear if you dig in a bit.

But it's certainly not "Stop that shit."

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Mix the Computer Blue scream with Cream and have Darling Nikki playing as the foundation.

Okay this a dramatic revelation on the various tracks that make up this song. Now I want to know how this mix came about. The clarity is so nice and illustrates the mixing strategy so well.

It was mixed in 2019 by David Leonard, from a 96k copy of the original 24 track master. It was released with a bunch of other tracks by other artists to mark the opening of a new Atmos mixing studio.

At one point it looked like they were planning on releasing the whole Purple rain album, but unfortunately it hasnt materialized

I can fantasize this treatment would happen for the multilayered, perfectly arrranged, but unfortunately very flatly mastered "Black Album"

Thanks for that info!

No problem

I agree the Black Album has the potential for an awesome Atmos mix, if they did it right.

Some of the mixes they did for other artists are a bit hit and miss, though i'm pretty confident if they got David L back or someone else who knows his music from that era they would do a good job

At 3:23 you hear him scream something in the background. It’s hard to make out though.

That always sounded like fingers rubbing up and down guitar strings, like he's gearing up for a solo.

Lol

He's saying "A-B-C-D!" in a spoken voice with the "D" being more of a scream. You can hear it plain as day, even on the reguler version

Well it is easier to hear once you know what to listen for I suppose.
Unless your ears are so shot that you hear it as guitar strings being rubbed, in which case there’s no way you will be able to hear it falloff

I don't necessarily buy the ABCD thing. If we're talking about the little break after the 2nd chorus before the guitar solo kicks in, it's not "clear as day," either. I hear a lot of "when doves cry" lines building up to the solo, but nothing remotely near "ABCD."

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Nope. Neither did the three other people I had listen, not even telling them where to listen for it, just what to listen for. Not buying it.

Well, that's not where I was listening. I was distracted by it cutting out on the left channel. I thought maybe my headphones were fuckin' up (I seem to have terrible luck w/ them). I kept listening to the break before the solo. I think I was a little after the intended part, because I was trying to hear just (like a second or two) before the solo kicks in. It was before that a tiny bit.

So yeah, I heard it once I realized the left channel cutting out was purposeful (albeit unnecessary). Still a weird moment in the song. All his frettin' over the bass and shit, and he throws the alphabet in there? Chiiiile...

I'd still love to hear the vocal stems, because God knows what else is going on in there.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
