looks like an excellent documentary on the influence of the tight-knit "black" community in North Minneapolis and how it helped to shape not only Prince's career, but the careers of Sonny Thompson, snd Andre Cymone also...i can see how and why the racist non black people, and people who are not from North Minneapolis would have some type of problem with it, or disdain for it, as it doesnt fit their narrative of what they wanted Prince to be.

so cool to see the great Spike Moss get some exposure in this documentary...he's always been a revered and well respected civic leader and voice of the people, in the Twin Cities

In Mr Nelson, Prince’s mentor, Spike Moss, explains the origin and influences that shaped Prince’s musical skills, how he built the foundation in music from which to launch his career into the stratosphere and become the greatest of performers.

Music icons such as Chuck D, Macy Gray and Chaka Khan recount never-before-told stories of Prince the performer and Prince the man, and how his unique creativity in turn inspired them to do their best work.

And finally, his fans share their own personal recollections and experiences of their personal connections with Prince Rogers Nelson over social media and attending private performances by Prince at Paisley Park.

I'll admit I'm curious about Minneapolis history.
Time keeps on slipping into the future...

This moment is all there is...

yep..."The Way" in North Minneapolis was where Prince, Andre Cymone, Sonny Thompson, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, all went to practice and hone their craft during their teenage years... it was an amazing community center and safe haven that provided all types of creative opportunites and activities for North Minneapolis youth, in a city that didnt/doesnt offer many venues to help keep Minneapolis youth off the streets and away from negativity.

I'm gonna check out this feature. I spent brief time touristing in Minneapolis and the people are pretty cool, but the recent city tragedies have certainly put a spotlight on the inequities among the peoples of that metropolis. It'll be cool to get some more perspective on Prince's hometown and another Midwestern Black community. I can say that I know that Prince was proud of his home!

Andrea Swensson's excellent "Got To Be Someting There" details almost everything in the doc but in greater detail.

The trailer is a little all over the place (is it a about social injustice in MPLS, young musicians looking for a "way out, etc) but it looks really interesting if it's actually about his beginnings as a musician.

The Way was set up as a community hub after the riots in 1966 due to the racial discrimination and inequalities black people faced.

It played a role in Prince and his peers lives in regards to their musical development/journey and the documentary should be about both the bolded, they go hand in hand.

This is an opportunity to learn more about his formative years, where he grew up and the streets he stomped. There's not enough emphasis on that as far as I'm concerned and I'm really interested to hear from people who were hopefully there at the time.

I'm looking forward to this documentary.

Very cool. I hope they get a chance to tighten up the trailer. It feels like two films; one on how great Prince was and one on the social side. Interviews look great too.

I haven't seen the trailer but anyone interested in Prince should find this documentary appealing. Who wouldn't want an insight in to this part of his young life and where he came from?

I think The Way is really important in Prince's story, it should be documented properly and I hope it is. If it hadn't been set up after the '66 riots we may never have had the wonderful experience of Prince,,,,,, 💜

Yes I only got around to reading this recently, it's excellent! Done well this film could be a good accompaniment to it. and let's be honest, more people are gonna watch a film than read a book.

Why?

Certain things are in the public domain, cannot be blocked by laws.etc.

That doesn ot make things always right, though.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

im interested to see it.

know very little about it tbh, not read andreas book either, but id be interested to see.

it looks good in the trailer actually, better than i thought it would be from the illustration.

tbh im also watching it as i hope some of the flyte tyme and time guys are in there too.

genuinely no antagonism here, but what do you think this film will show that people dont want to see? i think everyone knows he came up in the band circuit in mpls, and that he wasnt playing with any white people at that point in his life right?

I just had a look at the Charly Records' 94 East re-issue and there is a lot of information in the Vol 1 booklet that's maybe akin to this film.

This was good. There were some interesting interviews and stories I hadn’t heard before, and the history I already did know was fleshed out a bit more. It’s worth watching just for Chaka Khan’s comments alone. I was also quite moved at the end.

I started a tread because I didn't know there was a first one. When I typed it in the search box nothing came up. Maybe if it had, I wouldn't have made a "dupe" tread.

Ain't nothin opportunistic about it. Same thing can be said about this fansite! It's a documentary showcasing Prince in a positive way. You're probably an opportunist yourself.

I really want to say Chaka's cancelled to me after the VLAD interview with Luenell about Prince having herpes. She'd probably know and hope she gets snubbed again at this years RRHOF.

Prince gave herpes to someone ? LOL

Well, I checked and she indeed said that (1:00:15).

You know, whatever truth or crap she tells, i don't care.

Her voice, and her singing over decades... I still am excited whenever she does something new.

Same, I don't care about MJ's child abuse acusations / truth or lies either, still love his super written songs.

-

Is it possible to see this Northside... documentary over her in Europe?

(I'm not all good with all that streaming and pay per view etc)

Not a great doc.
Thought it would be about his beginnings and local collaborators but its just a potted history
Disappointing
Some nice little interview bits but it's all over the place
Shame as I'd love a doc on princes early period, hearing from his friends, early bands, etc
This starts off like that not then becomes just a surface level dip in his careerr

I don't really consider myself an MJ fan, but I'm very glad about the outcome of Wade "lyin ass" Robson. If he and James keep wanting to run into a brick wall, let them. I agree with everything you say.

Yeah, that was a wacky comment by Chaka. As for the RRHOF, it’s not looking good for Chaka, at least as far as the fan vote. Tina looks like a shoo-in.
