Thanks for sharing, a great article. The date of the recording is either a coincidence or part of the purple mystery...he really had too many of those 'coincidences'

Duane Tudahl has now shared those same pages in his own FB group, and it looks like his pages are better quality images and more legible: https://www.facebook.com/...552884635/ .

Didn't know that!

it was always called "Sometimes it Snows in April" or at the very least "Snow in April", i can't quite remember. there was a picture of it written down somewhere. was it in his biography? there has been so much information these past few years. but i'm certain that i had already seen information on this site about the bare bones of the song being late 70s.

It's on the handwritten tracklist for an early configuration of For You from the memoir.

I sorta wonder if it was a melody for the chorus or something. Its melody is quite different than the verses of the song. And while we're so used to it on Parade, if you sorta just listen to the notes of the chorus melody, it feels like something older, than the newer variations in the verses. That's just conjecture, but reading that bit of the book made me think about what part(s) of that song date back to his early days.

Hell, maybe it was just the lyric idea, maybe it was a melody line. Who knows.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Dez also tried to sell a cassette with it from 1978

"On side B, Prince had his work versions of 6 songs, which I left intact for, at that time, unknown reasons (obviously, we now know it preserved a piece of musical history)." The Side B, containing Prince's songs, opens with an early, acoustic version of "So Blue", followed by two unreleased love songs with bouncy, upbeat choruses and risque lyrics. Next is an early version of "Gotta Broken Heart Again", which later appeared on Prince's seminal "Dirty Mind" album. The fourth track features heavy guitar distortion and a chorus that include very candid sexual pleas from Prince. The tape ends with a very early, virtually unrecognizable version of "Sometimes it Snows in April", with only a couple of lines from the chorus making the final cut onto the later version of the song that's featured on the "Parade" album, released some eight years after this tape was created. The audio quality on the tape is very good, with Prince's voice very clear and the overall sound still quite sharp. Tape is offered as collector's piece only and does not come with rights for reproduction, manufacturing or distribution. Cassette is housed in its plastic cover with "Prince Worktape '78" handwritten on it by Dez. From the collection of Dez Dickerson."

Putting the impossibility of him writing a song about his fictional passing and literally passing on the very day it was recorded 30 something years later aside. His first words on record were ALL OF THIS AND MORE IS FOR YOU and his last words on record were THATS IT, from Big City. If that ain't spooky.....

He also did the full circle thing with his hair, started with afro, ended with afro.

What other symmetries, coincidences, bizarre things have you all discovered?

LOL uh, I don't think so. They were bestiest. They weren't at war for a long time. Mary was a short period. CT was stuck in Paris with no way back to Miami (although why wasn't Tricky holding down a job?). I sorta believe it was just his struggle to not be a gigolo. The character probably never had aspirations to be a hooker in Paris when he could've done anything else in Miami or otherwise. And why they hell were they in Paris to begin with? Why go there? For what reason? Was there an exhibition at the Lourve? lol lol

The real civil war was between lust and love, as it always is with Prince. They both have four letters, but are entirely different words. At first, he wants to swindle women for money, including Mary who is a big ticket item. Then he falls in love with her. Yeah, Tricky sorta gets in the mix, but the real love battle is with CT and Mary. It wasn't Tricky who she was fuckin', it was CT.

because it didn't come with rights to distribute or reproduce and the buyer is known, so it would be kind of stupid of that person to then rip it and upload it as they are the only source it could have come from and this have the estate sue them. i guess smile

I just re-read the details on the auction site about side A:

Dez Dickerson, who says of the tape's origin: "Prince originally gave me the cassette in late 1978 because he wanted me to listen to a record he had recorded on side A (a female-fronted funk band whose name I don't remember now). Sometime during the next year or so, I used the A side to record some scratch bass and guitar parts for songs I was going to be recording for a rock/power pop demo I was doing, recording over the original content (you can still hear a snippet of the funk record at the end of the side).”

I originally read this and thought Dez had recorded over some Prince music for a protege band he was working on, which would have been like painting over the Mona Lisa. However, I think it’s more likely it was female funk band like, Parlet or Brides of Funkenstein, that was on the tape.

P.S. Back on track, I hope these demo early versions on tape get thoroughly checked and preserved by Michael Howe and the team working on the vault archiving process. We had “I Feel For You”, but I hope they release some more, e.g. as surprises to mark anniversaries.

I really love Sometimes It Snows In April, and it saved me once during an exam as a kid in the late 80’s. I knew sod all really about art, so when I had my General Studies A-level and a question came up to discuss if the purpose of art is to make people happy, I squirmed for a minute or two. But then, I thought about this song and wrote about how the lyrics convey sadness and the feelings of rawness from hearing the strings of the guitar being played. I managed to flesh out, a quite convincing argument. Well I got the top mark, which I doubt would have been the case without hearing this song.

They were in Nice, Cote d'Azur region aka the French Riviera, many miles from Paris.

I don't remember any mention of Paris or any landmarks in the film.

....and they were there because Prince wanted to be there. He was in love with France.
At one time, maybe coincidentally with the film, he had an apartment in Paris.

I know he had a love for France, I can see why, it's a beautiful country.

I don't remember any dialogue in the film to suggest it's supposed to be set in Paris and surely Prince would've just filmed there if that were the case.

We have the lyrics re Versailles in Girls & Boys but other than that,,,,, I'll have to watch it again, maybe I blinked when the Eiffel Tower was on the screen.
