Udo thinks he's a shareholder on the board of directors for the Prince Estate so he wants answers for everything including why OP brought up such an old song.

.

Wrong.

Udo does not think about this.

It is simply rehash to start about 'new' things that are not really new and are 25+ years old or so.

It would have been a different case when the OP e.g. would have used a set of nice headphones, etc, to dig deep in the audio and really hear something new.

Your utterance is simply a projection of what you think about me.

Answers in simple earthly matters should be no problem.

I do like your elaborate style of argumentation.

You really add to the discussion, if any.

On top of that you appear to not understand reality that well.

It means that people might observe you do not understand how discussions work.

Also it appears that you not understand facts of reality.

Third is wasting precious resources because of this nonsense you utter.

Precious?

Yes. If you do not understand that and feel like you have to utter nonsense again then that is another indication of lack of understanding of reality.

typo...

"Slipped" sounds like he was being sneaky. It was his song, as were all the songs in there. Nothing "slipped" about it.

I remember hearing it on the AMA's, and just being fascinate with it. It was a while later I found the CD single, and loved the extended cut. The B-side mix is okay, but I prefer the long original. Also loved the artwork.

The video is cute. Nothing deep, but a fun put-together.

.

I agree that Prince wasn't being sneaky about anything in the Purple Medley. But I did think that he wondered what people would notice. He dropped in half a measure of 777-9311... no lyrics, just put it in there. It was a few listens before I noticed it. That added to the fun of it all for me.

And of course... the video for it is out there.

Yes it is.

I forgot that there was new footage shot for that video. Completely slipped my mind.

Literally the last thing on his mind, making a medley of his own music, despite who sang it.

People, by that point, knew who wrote all those The Time and Sheila E. songs. He'd even finally reclaimed "Nothing Compares 2 U" by 1993 after two versions were out there. It doesn't make sense that he was thinking, "Oh, let me play 'A Love Bizarre' to see if people notice." Prince singing his own music isn't something to "notice," as implied.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

This song was another sign that Prince was losing it, or had already lost it.
Everything that came after it was sub-par.

It's a mixtape, at best. Not a song. He wasn't "losing it," whatever that means.

And your logic is flawed. If everything after The Purple Medley was subpar, then it had to be the last and greatest thing he ever did - because everything else was downhill. You can't go all the way downhill unless you're at the top.

I can only deduce that you really love it.

That's like some political debate strategy there!

I think the Purple Medley was his wink and nod to "Hooked on Classics"

I don't listen to it often, but I did (and do) love it.

Mixtape . . . or mini-Greatest Hits, but re-recorded! The video is cool too.

LOL I used to love Hooked on Classics and Hooked on Swing when I was a kid.

It reminds me of when there was supposed to be some big box set for Madonna, and it fell thru, so they released that Remixed and Revisited EP, with the "Hollywood" and "Into The Groove" mashup that featured Missy Elliott, plus a couple of new tracks, etc etc. It was basically a consolation prize. The Purple Medley, while fun, never really served any purpose. I don't even know how it counted in his contract for what he owed the WB. Was it just an extension of the AMA performance?

Princevault says it was released to coincide with The Ultimate Live Experience, which is sorta odd since he didn't hardly perform any older "Prince" songs at the show, other than "I Love U In Me."

Seems the edit version was also due to be released as the opening track on Ultimate, but was removed before release. So other than being connected to the tour in Europe, I'm not sure the purpose of this stand-alone track. I still dig it, though.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I realized there are a couple of great moments in this.

The take on "let's Work" should be a full fledged remix. Something just to comemorate the single or something. Same with "I Wanna Be Your Lover."

Also, the mix of "Irresistible Bitch" and "Sexy MF" brings back when he did a medley of "bitch" and "Possessed." Also, the way he mixed "Cream" and "Peach!" That screams Peaches n' Cream EP or something!

I also love the extra drum beats and production in "Little Red Corvette." Feels like a dance mix without being too "club" like.

Some of the arrangement from "Alphabet St" was later used when he did that "Let's Work" and "Delirious" mix for a few years. It may also be from "Rock N Roll Is Alive," but I dont' remember off hand.

"A Love Bizarre" is more than "snuck in there." It's just on full display with the grieving widow Sheila's video. And let's not forget the ending "Beautiful Night" jam section reuses "Ooops up side ya head" chant (and I think maybe a bit of the horn arrangemetn) from "Love On A Blue Train."

Be nice to each other, people. Life is short. In just a few decades, you won't be there to enjoy Prince's music. Or anything else, for that matter.

.

Anyway, I bought "Purple Medley" in 1995 and I still listen to it from time to time. It's not essential. But it's quite fun when you're in the mood for it. Even Kirky J's remixes. I'd like to hear a full version of that "Shockadelica" remix one day. cool

A record store by me back then (metro Detroit area) always had "white label" remixes. Some were good, some bad. Not just of Prince, but other artists too.

Purple Medley reminded me of one of those white label releases, just from Prince himself.

I'm not sure if Purple Medley was testing the waters for re-recorded versions of his back catalog (pretty sure that was 1999:TNM) but Purple Medley turned out much better than 1999:TNM.

Agreed on all points.

I also thought the Baby I'm A Star section could go on and on for me! And Sexy Dancer with that Endorphinmachine esque guitar runs in the beginning.

Purple Medley is a kickass track. Never mind the previous posters who are chastizing you because you made this thread, Prince fan enthusiam makes me a more enthusiastic fan too - spreading the positivity around.
