It is an interesting discussion, but legacy is always a fluid thing anyway and subject to revision. Prince has a lot of unreleased music available freely already on many platforms, I would argue that it is a part of his legacy already.

Prince is right up there with the Beatles and Rolling Stones as far as legacy goes. Hell, the RRHOF and Super Bowl videos alone vault him back into the collective music conscience several times a year. There are still so many people that will grow and ‘discover’ his music. As current artists grow and develop, the Prince influence will find its way into future projects. Not to mention he basically owns the color purple, so there’s that.
(Insert something clever here)

Of course it will impact his legacy.

The release strategy will also play a part. I’m not complaining or making my own suggestions, but so far 60 new tracks have come out buried on extra discs of existing albums. The quality has been very high. For almost half of them, nearly sky high.

But now we have 10 coming out that are not buried. That have a neon sign around them. Loads of attention. And it’s not going to be anywhere near as good as the previous 60. Even if I’m pleasantly surprised, and the odds are against it, it’s inconceivable it will come anywhere near matching the other Vault tracks.

A casual music fan or even a casual Prince fan discussing the legendary Vault a few years from now is more likely to discuss the tracks on W2A than All My Dreams or Moonbeam Levels.

The only think impacting his legacy, and impacting it overwhelmingly positively, is the explosion of music videos, live clips, etc. being shared after he died.

For a man desperate to recapture the youngins, he did his damn best to squash his legacy and keep it hidden from the social media generation.

Until I find the righteous one...
