why is there STILL no proper prince live album?*

*live album from his prime.

i know some of you will dislike me saying that, and im not saying the ONA tour album is bad, or that the live sets on the SOTT and 1999 SDEs are bad either, though i am not sure the utrecht show is anything like the best representation of the 87 tour TBH, but its ludicrous that an artist like prince, still has no definitive live album.

every major pop figure of note, whether its hendrix, the beatles, stones, or later on, talking heads, has a proper live album release to their name. i guess stevie wonder doesnt which is a shame, but hey.

but for an artist who people used to say you HAD to see live, even if you didnt love his records, for him not to have a live album out, one that people can go to, its just weird and a total oversight.

if nothing else, i hope the estate remedies this one day.

and obviously, the live album to release would be the SOTT tour in paris. they should have made that a release last year.

biggrin

What, in your opinion, would be the best way of putting it together?

For me, a complete Sams/First Avenue boxset. It's not necessarily representative of his live tours but sure what is unless you were at them.

What defines a proper live album? Stand-alone release? Complete set list? No overdubs or edits? One show?

I think it's high time that The Estate released PRINCE: PIANO & MICROPHONE: THE FINAL SHOWS, which would include the Atlanta shows, as well as the Oakland shows, and the New Zealand shows.

some editing is okay as long as its not extensive.

but otherwise, yes. everything you said.

that could be great too.

i would love some proper recordings of that tour.

hopefully some were made by prince.

but that tour is more for fans i think.

prince deserves at least one proper live album documenting a tour with a band behind him.

All the best live albums are full of overdubs and fixes, and i'm ok with that because they're trying to replicate the feeling of being at a show without any of the visuals to accompany them. Some people argue that soundboards aren't very good for the same reason; too sterile, where's the audience?? There's more to a liveshow than the notes being played.

Just some things to consider, I haven't got the answer.

some bootlegs even mix audience and soundboard recordings which can be a good idea.

Interestingly I have noticed live albums often come out in support of a crappy studio album ... or at least a poor selling one ... ONA is no exception to that rule .. and knowing p was miserly with song credits and payment in general .. sounds like a bit much negotiating and compensating for prince liking ... in the end the bootleggers did a great job archiving many outstanding shows and the box sets are just gravy .. p had also been visually focussed since becoming a movie star and in that regard released many official live video packages and probably felt the tour was represented

Prince and the Revolution Live has been available as a standalone audio release digitally for about a year now. Is that not prime enough for you?

Probably because P had a strict, almost miserly attitude to releasing live material.

Between '87 and '89 we got the Sign tour, then Lovesexy, The Ryde Divine in '92 (TV special, if you can count that), and The Sacrifice of Victor and The Undertaker in '95. After that came ONA in 2002. And that's all it. So the Estate want to get it right, I suppose.

Contrast that with The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Metallica who release live stuff for fun. Then there's Frank Zappa. Or Todd Rundgren. P also didn't want anyone in audience recording him. But as far as we know he kept all soundboard recordings in the vault, and didn't chuck bad nights.

nope that was a discrete release.

nice they have made it available separately, but id like it released physically, even if just in limited quanities.

they could at least do the same as they did for the PR tour show for the 87 and 88 tours.

i guess the SOTT film has the little dialogue in between songs that might make it harder to pull audio from that, but the LS 88 show that was on video is there, so it cant be that hard to make that into a digital release. there is a laserdisc after all.

the best thing they could possibly do to demonstrate his live ability is release a 93-95 aftershow/one-off gig. maybe one of those late 95' shows at paisley, or something from glam slam in 94'

fuck the rev, fuck the 80's. doesn't hold a candle to 93-95. you wanna talk prime, that was his live prime.

I attended all Paris SOTT shows: as you know, set list was the same so why not Utrecht?

Ah yes, the cocaine years... smile. But surely nothing beats the stupendous brilliance of Sign"☮" the Times concert vid, walking that tight line between commercial and avant-garde in a live setting, better than anyone else in music history. Still unsurpassed.

its not just about the setlist, its about the peformance. the performance on the wonderboy bootleg is 10 times better than the utrecht show which just sounds like any old night. nothing that special.

There is but only digital. ONA is cool but also kind of a snoozefest featuring too much material from TRC.

This is a good question.Santana has at least three essential ‘live’ albums in his catalog (‘Lotus’ (1975),Moonflower’ (1977) and ‘Sacred Fire’ (1993)...it’s possible that Prince simply wasn’t fond of live albums.

I think he was worried he would always be compared to the live album if he released one or that it would reveal mistakes

He prob also thought each tour was better than the last so no point releasing one until he has things perfect... which in his mind I'm guessing was the ONA era

I'm sure he said he was reluctant as live albums were big statements

There's tons of b00tlegs around with uncensored complete shows.

No edits, no overdubs, etc by Prince/The Estate/WB/etc.

So why would we want for a WB/Estate show in this realm when there's loads of non-live stuff to be dealt with?

I mean: at this slow pace unreleased studio is more important.

The Estate fails everyday to maximise profit.

Probably cuz those are the ones he did when he found out Vanity died and had a bit of an emotional show or two.

I honestly think that the Utrecht show is as good as the Paris Wonderboy show. What we need is a live album from the Act 2 tour - main show and after show. Prince's best band and the best setlists.
