Controversy & Prince Now: WOULD it have lasted?

I got 2 thinking recently, If Controversy had gone the distance, and sailed thru those stormy waters of the mid nineties, would Controversy still be with us? confuse

I only mention this due 2 how He gained this sudden fascination with words and their 'hidden' meanings. rolleyes

Prime example being: 'CONtroversy' - Let's face it, they wouldnt have stood a bloody chance would they? lol

disCUSS...

In the mid nieties no, no chance. Hell even now the song itslef barely stands a chance. He states in the song is he black or white, is he straight or gay etc...now on TRC and his stance now, he states quite clear who and what eh is..and goes further by almost stating who and what YOU should be..and HOW things should be..to a point he does this. He has went from questioning and talking of the inquisitiveness of folks, to know making bold statemnts as facts.

Yeah... the day i hear Him say the words:
"Takumi - bring me my pulpit!"
Im gone... lol

...and that aint no religious jibe by any means - b4 somebody feels the desperate need 2 jump 2 Prince's 'defence'! rolleyes

I just dont like (no - scrub that, wrong word...) I dont APPRECIATE the way he TELLS us these 'statements of truths' - I feel as if im being talked down 2 - I wouldnt talk down 2 him, so where does he get off?
When all is said and done though, we could pick apart every little nuance of the guys life, but it still comes back 2 the MUSIC.

Always has done - always will do... nod

Regarding Prince's fascination with the hidden meaning of words beginning with "CON", it was such a negative feed. He should then have put out a positive spin as to the hidden meaning of words that begin with "COM", such as: compliment, communicate, comfort, comprehend, compensate, comedic, to name a few, Then Controversy could change its name to another song title, "COME" (all ye Comrades).

nod WE lied too. there you go.

Integrated audience went home to separate homes and lives. Hell a read of Alex Hahn and even the "integrated" band was coming apart at the seams along racial lines. Like most cultural phenomena it can only accomplish but so much... usually just a feel good experience that does not translate into anything more transformative than that if there is no structural reform to facilitate that transformation.

The transformation never happened. A quick glance at this very site reveals that.

But we all know it is MORE than the music, surely? I think it is naiive 2 think that regardless of what he says or does, the music is all that matters...

I can tell u right now, that if Prince were an out and out homophobe, or suddenly started spouting extreme right wing Nazi BS, advocating hate etc etc, I'd be outta there. So it aint as simple Im afraid as that.

Luckily 4 us, he aint ever been that kind of guy.

But...WE digress here! memories of Controversy and thoughts at the thread at hand guys? Eileen did so very much with so little resources...it was a very special time indeed, and much missed...

PS: GREAT post 89loves67, loved that! peace

The song was released as a single for the first time in UK, In 1993; and went straight in at #5. Prince's 5th biggest ever hit, at that date. So, yes it would have been a hit in the nineties!

I'm feelin' the whole we lied too thread. It's nice to believe in a utopian paisley existence, but that can't really get you through the day. Anyway, alot of us suspected that despite all the good vibes he was throwing down musically, the Prince of old was something of an asshole as a person. He may still be, but whateva, just gimme the tunes.

Yeah I was wondering if u were talking about the mag. It was good, I looked forward to receiving it but I thought it was a bit sychophantic. Every new album was greeted with, it's brilliant, his best yet, from Eileen. When she said this about the SYMBOL album I thought that it was a bit much.

I think with the advent of the NPGMC it would have petered out. But a Controversy website run by Eileen might have been interesting.

The NPG Music Club and all that he has been working is enough 4 me.

I just want more music from the man that is still 4 me the GREATEST recording ARTIST of our time.

What!! You don't care that Eileen had a full time job and used all her spare time to produce an officially endorsed colour magazine for thousands of Prince fans around the world for nothing. And then got set upon by hundreds of fans at Wembley Stadium when it was announced by Prince's people that she had tickets for that nights aftershow, and nearly got injured in the clamour of people trying to get to her.

Are you heartless???!!!
